I just thought I'd throw this out there, but will a RX pass cali smog with a blown apex or coolant seal. It seems like NO, but I've never tried.

I think it is highly unlikely that it would pass. But then again the symptoms for a broken apex seal range from a slightly irregular idle to an engine that simply won't start. So it might pass if you are at the not-so-bad end of that scale.

I passed with a blown apex seal.
I adjusted the idle screw to raise the idle rpm before taking it to the smog shop; anything below 1200rpm and the car would shake like it was having an epileptic siezure. The smog tech hooked my car up to the dyno and although I was close to failing at certain parts of the test, I still passed stringent CA smog. Oh yeah, this was at a test-only center since my car had been labeled a gross polluter at some point in time. Other than the poor idle and bad gas mileage my car ran fairly well.
Individual results will vary, of course.

My car passed smog with fly colors. It's my first FD and I have 2 FC's. The FD's scare the SH*T out of me and I didn't want to have to deal with a blown engine. THe idle is perfect, no smoke no shake, and passed smog. So I'm safe.
