SoCal-SD RX Club - Kart Challenge!! May 21
Guys,
The much anticipated north vs south rotorhead challenge has finally been organized.
Make plans to attend this winner take all challenge on Saturday May 21.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
To all wannabe go-kart racers in the North vs. South Rotorhead Challenge Round #1:
$60. per person (Due by May 14th to reserve a spot)
The date has been set for Saturday May 21. The time is 2PM. The location is K1 Speed
in Carlsbad.
K1 Speed is an indoor track with electric go-karts located in Carlsbad near Palomar
airport in North San Diego County. The karts are a lot of fun and challenging to
drive quickly. Everyone we know who has driven there has had a great time. These
people ranged from complete novices to experienced auto racers. Pro racers like
Boris Said, Ron Capps, Travis Pastrana and Jeremy McGrath have driven there. The
karts have good low end torque and the racing surface is relatively wide with high
grip asphalt making for good close racing. Average laps are in the 32 to 35 second
range. For more info see:
http://www.k1speed.com
All details have been worked out on this much anticipated event with K1's management
and have come up with an exciting format with lots of driving for a great price!
Based on a 20 driver minimum, we will run two race groups of 10 drivers each. Each
group will get a:
· 12 lap practice
· 14 lap qualifier
· 16 lap race - the Formula 1 style standing start will be gridded based on the
times from the qualifier
The top 3 finishers in the 16 lap races will receive a high quality trophy. Pictures
of the race winners and others will be made available via email. We get all of this
for $60. The normal price of this package to non-members is $75. Compare this with
going to Dromo or Speedcircuit where you will pay $50 for just two non-race lapping
sessions. Additionally the driving experience will be better with a wider track,
better traction and faster karts than the other venues. But it doesn't end here.
K1 has generously offered a Grand Finale race of at least 14 laps. This race will
consist of the top 5 finishers in each of the two group races. The winner will recieve
a huge trophy for his or her victory. This is a $300 value that K1 is throwing in
free for our group only! If we have more than 24 drivers, we will have a third race
group with the top 50% of each of the 3 groups going into this grand finale.
However, it is critical that we have at least 20 prepaid drivers so that we can
get the funds to K1 before the event. Let's not let this great package get away.
If it is successful K1 has said that they will work with us to put on other unique
races that may also include their future new venue in Irvine.
Get your money to John L. any way you can: cash, check, etc.

Karting is way mo betta than paint ball !!!
Especially if you like cars and the challenge of driving.
Although the event is just over a week away, we are getting down to the wire on making a committment for the event. K1 Speed has given us a great deal , including trophies for the the high placers.
If you went to MazFest and did not get the opportunity to put your car on the track at Buttonwillow, you can take care of your driving fix here. Hey, even if you did get on the track, make plans for another dose of driving excitement.
Be sure to get your money in to Gary or I (John) to reserve your spot.
Send us an e-mail if you will be taking the challenge.
We will be meeting for dinner afterwards, so even if you cannot make the actual karting event, come join us for dinner. Likely Karl Strauss, but we haven't worked that out as yet.
Check the following for updates:

Hope to see you there.

For all Kart Drivers :
Please show up at least 30 minutes early. That is, show up by 1:30pm.
We will have a table set up just to the right, inside the main enrance to K1Speed. We will need to verify you and organize you into groups.
You MUST check in with us in order to participate. If you must still pay, be sure to get there early. If you already paid by cash or check, you are covered.
For those new to K1 Speed, you will need to "register" with K1 at the counter. The teminals near their counter are for that. It is pretty self explanatory. Do NOT pay them until after you have checked in with a San Diego RX-7 Club rep.
See ya'll there,
John

OK, OK ... So I've been slow.
Not having a digital camera, means I have to shoot up the roll. I don't mind "wasting" frames, but not on blanks. Anyway, just got the pics back middle of last week. (I was at Reno-Fernley Raceway having fun over Memorial Weekend. Ya all shoulda b'n there!)
Mel,
Thanks for posting this up. I was getting around to doing it.
I was not as pleased with the processing this time. Used a different provider. May have also been the camera and the low light. Oh well, I doctored them as best I could.
Resolution, basically about 200 - 300 dpi. K1Speed sent the group shot, but at 300 dpi, it was only 2.6"x2". Sufficient for web posting, but not printing. If I resize it to 4"x6" it comes out to about 130 dpi; at 3.5"x5" is is about 160 dpi.
If anyone wants a "hi-res" copy, please drop me a note.
The final results were:
P...Name.........................Best lap.........Club
1...matt hubbard.............28.44............ SD (sorta)
2...john laiche.................28.80............. SD
3...kyle childers...............29.07.............unk
4...todd noe....................29.09............ unk
5...jason munschhof........29.33........... SD
6...dan jurgens...............29.30............SD (sorta)
7...alvaro garcia..............29.33........... SoCal
8...mel pascua................29.76............SD
9...mike vitug..................29.44............SoCal
10.chuck moore..............29.69............SD
Next time we'll get a much larger turnout and won/t need to depend on dragging walk-ups into the event. However, thank you to them this time as it resulted in a great time by all. There were some really beat people when all was said and done. We at least had a good crew of about 6 join us at Karl Strauss.
K1 Speed anticipates opening a venue in Irvine about August.
