Jesse I was hoping you would have been at the meet so we could fill out some DMV transfer of title paper. My school is right by your work and I get out at 12.00. If you are there that early than maybe I can drop in.

CSM: It's meant to be a nearly wide open class. Used to be regional 'Street Mod' until National made a class with that name, so we switched to California Street Mod. Real restriction is 'Capable of being licensed', which is pretty vague, but seems to be holding up to any scrutiny. An important part to me though is DOT tires, as slicks couldn't be licensed.
so far it seems as it is the ultamate catch all as long as your on DOT tires.
a real CSM car.
Here is the question I asked the experts.
I read the rules for CSM and they are very vague
CALIFORNIA STREET MODIFIED (CSM)
Vehicles eligible for CSM must be capable of being licensed for street use in
California, shall be run on DOT approved tires and must meet all SCCA
Solo2 Safety requirements.
reading this makes me think one of two things.
1) the car NEEDS to be in a condition that if a DMV officer (or highway patrol officer) were to pull you over there would be nothing about it that is illigal. no headers that are not CARB legal, no intakes that are not CARB legal, no porting, nada.
2) or it makes me think as long as you some way some how got it registered, you can race it. meaning you fudged the smog check, and if you were to get pulled over you can get busted for that sweet non CARB legal intake or ported head......
which way does CSM allow. super strict, or almost a "run what you brung" (assuming you have registration in the glove box).

one response to my post so far, he said its a run waht ya brung kinda class. very open catch all class.
both of you would fit nicley in it. of course as I have said many many times, you will get killed should anyone bring a REAL CSM car, but here locally you will have a blast!
I know Jesse said he liked it when he ran that night race

we are talking about that now. the CSM rules are extreamly vague. it is supposed to be a catch all class. but the....... you know what, here.... this will make it easier.
here is what has been going on in the solo2 thread regaurding CSM:
me:
sorry for bringing a dead post back to life.

Marshal:
nah, all that smog legal crap is in ST. CSM is run what you brung. Just no mod cars.
KJ:
Interesting though that we seem to have two 'capable' standards:
For tires - must be DOT, because you can't register without it.
For everything else - it is assumed that you are "capable" of finding someone to give you a CA registration
Marshal:
the dot tires is a seperate requirement from 'street legal-ness' just like the solo safety rules have no bearing on street legal-ness.
per the sups "Vehicles eligible for CSM must be capable of being licensed for street use in
California, shall be run on DOT approved tires and must meet all SCCA Solo2
Safety requirements
Me:
yeah I have ready that over and over again..... i still think it can be take either way.
if you take it litteral "must be capable of being licensed for street use in
California" means NOTHING can be done that would cause it to not be licensed in california.
to be licensed in california you need to be able to pass smog. to pass smog you can not have ANYTHING done to the ca that is not CARB legal.
which would make this a stock class with open rules minus power stuff. any shocks, any springs, and body mods, anything..... as long as it does not affect that smogability.
I am not trying to start anything here.... it does not even effct me as I run CSP and don't plan to move. I just wanted to know what class all of my friends could run in so they can run together. and it looks like it is CSM..... but then I started to wonder what REALLY fit into CSM as the rules (to me) are VERY unclear. dont mind me, i am just a guy with to much time on his hands.
thats it so far..... again, it is supposed to be a catch all... I just htink they need to change the way they word their rules.

There are many power adders that are CARB legal, i.e. turbos, superchargers, cams, and headers, that a car could have that would ban it from SP and keep them from choosing SM2/SM in which power mods are wide open and unregulated. It seems like CSM was created for cars with legal power adders and it should be that way. Cars running un-CARB mods should not be allowed IMO. Maybe it's called "California" SM because of our smog ****'s and rewards people who DD his/her autoX car and obeys the law.
Also, in regards to the SM class I like the idea of my competition. All Porchses have been banned and all cars must have four seats from factory. It leaves me against Neons, Camaro's, Mustangs, Tiburons, Hondas(minus the CRX), Acuras, supras, etc. I think The Starion stacks up pretty well against these cars and makes sense that they are my competition. I just need to go over to Solo to find out is AWD cars are excluded. I hope they are!

I dont think they are. bcause I THINK Evo's are SM as well...... that would be hard to beat.
here is more info on the CSM thing:
Need to go back to this from the 2003 supp regs:
CALIFORNIA STREET MODIFIED (CSM)
Any car which complies with Street Prepared Catagory Rules, with the following
exceptions/allowances:
(1) Engines and drive trains are un restricted - including engine swaps, air induction,
carburetion/fuel injection, transmissions, drive shafts, and rear
ends/axles/differentials.
(2) Suspension is un restricted - Any modification is allowed.
(3) Electrical system - Must have operational tail lights, brake lights, headlights, wipers
and turn signals. Instrumentation is
unrestricted.
(4) Bodywork:
(a) Body panels (including hoods, fenders & trunk lids), may be substituted with
panels of alternate materials.
(b) Hood scoops are allowed.
(c) Spoilers and/or wings are unrestricted.
(d) Must have a minimum of two seats. (rear seats may be removed)
As you can see it never said it had not be licensed in California. Where the current wording came from I don't know. It's not in the minutes.
info on the practice and race are up
Practice: http://www.solo2.com/eventpage.asp?eid={0F0AC3BD-BC15-4EBB-A16C-000EE649B828}
Race: http://www.solo2.com/eventpage.asp?eid={AD73C285-6CBD-4704-B559-8E91C1D75615}
(unless they change it, which they might) I run first thing in the morning and wrk right after that.... seet, should be an early day. get there about 7:15 or so and should be outa there by 11:00ish.
also, sory everyone for turning this into an auto cross thread, I am sure it will die down very soon and th normal nonsence will resume.
EDIT: Ok I see Damon is on the solo2 forum now. i will stop pasting everythign here. I am surethere will be solo talk for a bit, but at least it should die down now.

so who's down for a meet to the beach and bbq?

Hey Jason so what did you decide? I think if you go with a header it will still be really hard to past the visual even with the factory heat shield. I am not a big fan of the racing beat ones, they look sort of whimpy. If you like the more aggresive look like the catback that is on my convertible, then I would suggest the greddy catback for the fc3s. There is a mazda place in texas that is blowing out there last stock on hand of them. I will try to find their link for you. I 2nd Rob's vote, Nov sounds good .

Holy smokes that is alot of money for an exhaust. I still feel RB FTW. They sound awesome at the track IMO. I remember hearing an NA with the RB set-up come down the strait away and it made the sweetest tone. Just have the headers ceramic/ heat coated black and it will look stock and help lower under hood temps. Use the presilencer and bolt in the cat for the every 2-4 year smog inspection. Just my $.02
