I was reading about it last night after posting in this thread. I didn't find much information out there, but some US cities and the State of California are implementing a variety of portable smog screening.
One form appears to be what was described in this thread -- a large, mobile, but not exactly "portable" device that requires time to screen individual cars.
The other form that I read about is essentially a red-light camera for your exhaust. It essentially sniffs your car as you pass by and will send you a ticket in the mail. It sounds really creepy, but it seems like it'd be easy enough to defeat because the accuracy at a distance and not having a reading through the powerband would be questionable.

That's like telling people to junk their rx2's back in the day. To some people these cars hold more than monetary value. What if the smog exempt law didn't exist and all cars, no matter how old they are, had to pass smog if they were to be driven on public streets. You'd be just as worried if the case was that you only had one rx2 as a daily driver and a very small income.
Also, rx2's and rx3's aren't rust buckets if they're fully restored. I'm actually saving up so I can get my hands on a fully restored one. Those cars look so good!

.................running outta state plates is getting just as dangerous
My cousin got pulled over by a cop near his job....the cop told him that he ran his plate 2 months ago and it was reegistered out of state.
Well i guess you can only run an outta state plate for 30 days b4 they can now make you register it in this great state....
there was an old thread about this somewhere so you might want to get your car register real soon.....b4 they pull you over and check your ****

I've noticed these around my house too a couple times, it's literally been a block away from my house.
It was on Ball Rd. between Moody and Denni, on the westbound side both times.
Luckily i noticed on my way out going eastbound and then took the "long way" home
I'm going to hate the day when it slips my mind and i get caught in it, or they decide randomly to switch to the other side of the street.

That is crazy, I have never herd of this. Im a smog tech here in NorCal. As far as I know, this sounds illegal. All our in Ca are done the same, smogs are done on a Dyno. Did they really have some kind of portable dyno? & the person doing the smog HAS to be licensed. No CHP officer has a smog license.
I wonder if they were really doing smogs, or if they were just checking underneath the hoods. This is just like a search, they would still need probable cause to search your vehicle.
This just doesnt sound right

rx7 killer
I have a friend that owns his own smog shop and he's good friends with one of the state referees and part of the crack down is to nail the smog shops for illegal smogs and performance shops that do illegal engine swaps as well. I work in Stockton and I have seen this setup with the portable dyno and in Modesto as well, and of course their main target is imports.
