San Diego People-Some Qs!
Hey I may be moving to Central San Diego or somewhere near there within 6 months. I'm going to attend SD community college for one year then transfer to the CSU.
Just wondering if my rx7 is going to be safe or if I should leave it at my parents house up in Norcal and take my beater kia with me. (I have quite a bit invested and don't want anyone stealing it and taking it to Mexico...)
Also does anyone know how hard it is to find a job for an experienced waiter? (I've been one for almost 2 years).
Final question...any reccomended apartments, small houses to rent, whatever there is with 3 rooms that allows small animals? (2 of them) I don't want to end up in the ghetto, but am limited on money. (Final budget pending)

Look for a place in La Mesa. Try and stay above the 8 wherever you go though. Clairemont is nice. As long as you stay out of National City, Chula Vista, Imperial Beach, Paradise Valley, and San Syidro (I think that's how you spell it), you'll be good. Certain parts of Elcajon are no good also. Your FD should be fine as long as you have some security, but then again I have no alarm or anything and I stayed in La Mesa, and I was fine. You might want to bring both cars. Have your DD and your weekend FD.

ah thank you. bringing both cars may be an over time type task. I have an fc btw, but have nearly 20k into it. I have a viper alarm, but may look into getting a compustar with the 2 mile paging radius.
side note: also looking for 2 room appt.

well i hope you know what rent is gonna cost, it ain't gonna be cheap like it is here. think X2 for anything 2 blocks from the ghetto and X1.8 for the ghetto.
take the kia, i don't wanna see another stolen 7 thread. no one is gonna steal the kia even if you leave the keys in it.
lol

i 200% agree with trispeed, i happen to live in one of the areas mentioned not to live in (paradise valley). personally i would have to say look more in the east area of san diego, Mira mesa is a nice place but probably has the highest car theft rate in the county. el cajon, La mesa, grossmont, lakeside, santee would prolly be good choices but as stated, dont expect anything to be cheap in san diego. 2 of 10 are theifs down here. which college are you going to, Downtown? that place has pretty tight security and they still have cars stolen weekly. if you end up living out in the east area then i would recommend grossmont college because its closer. as for find a job as a waiter, theres a hundreds of fancy restaurants in downtown so it shouldn't be too hard, another thing to take into consideration when it comes to living is Eastlake or Chula Vista (ppl call it both) there are lots of gated communities and ppl renting out houses an apartments. just be careful. as for bringing both cars. alot of places provide one garage space and one parking space so id say garage the FC and park the kia outside. hope my input helps you out some.

I live in Mira Mesa and it's fine. Mostly just working families with a good amount of Marines. (And shopping carts...?) It's about a 30 min drive down to SDSU and Miramar Community College is the closest school. However, depending on where you are, getting out of Mira Mesa could take a while. It's about a 15 minute drive to get to the 5 or 805 and about 10 mins to the 15 for me.
I think Clairemont or La Mesa would be preferable, with Mesa and Grossmont community colleges respectively. One of my buddies lives in some apartments right off of Balboa Ave near the 805 and it's a little on the ghetto side. (This particular complex.) My sister has a house above Mission Bay and it's a pretty nice spot. You might look for some apartments in Mission Valley too. (Don't know what kind of pricing you'd be looking at though.)
As for jobs, I'd maybe look for something in Downtown (gaslamp quarter), La Jolla or Del Mar, as those are the richer parts of town.
Whether or not to bring the FC depends on where you end up. If you can garage it or have a gated community you should be fine. My FC isn't the greatest looking and nobody pays any attention to it.
I also make it a point not to leave any crap in my car. If you've got 5 turbo timers, a SAFC-II, and a fancy stereo system, there's a good chance it will get broken in to. If it's pretty subtle, you shouldn't have any problems.

Former Moderator. RIP Icemark.
People use the freeways as landmarks in So Cal.
If you have the money you want to stay west of the 15, and north of the 8.
Some will say west of the 5, but that is personal preference.
I grew up in San Diego and lived there up until about 9 years ago (when I decided that it was getting way too crowded in the area and nothing like when I grew up).
SDCC kinda sucks... it is a true "Jr college". Even Mesa is better.
If I were you, I'd be taking classes at SDSU and getting rid of your basics. SDSU class credits can be transfered to a real college (unlike many of the classes at SDCC or Mesa).

Which San Diego jr. college are you going to? I transferred from from Miramar to UCSD. Just try to live near school like Mira Mesa and attend Miramar, or you could also live in the Clairemont Mesa area and go to Mesa. That's the best way to keep expenses down.
And just a public service announcement...don't be a lifer in J.C.

I've got my ***ociates degree in "transfer studies", which I never knew existed until they sent me a letter asking if I wanted one.

If they want your car, they'll get it. All you can do is make it a hard target. I wouldn't agree with Mira Mesa being a parked car friendly area. 30 car thefts year to date, and 22 vehicle break-ins year to date. That area has a high rate of car theft, and has become increasingly ghetto since the early 90's. I think that fortunately for you, you don't have a honda, nissan or other common japanese import car. They seem to be car theif favorites, but that doesn't mean 7's are safe.

Use the above site to display car break in and car theft information for the city or community in San Diego county you might be moving to. It is self explanatory, just click the appropriate parameters for the type of crimes you are concerned about, in this case car theft and or vehicle break in.
