Ok. That time of year again: Smog Check
Ok. Time of year to get a smog check and need to prepare myself.
Is there a place in the Los Angeles Area where I can get a pre-test before it actually gets reported to the DMV?
I know they have test only vs. full on smog stations...Should I go to the test only center?

If your smog notice doesn't say TEST ONLY, I'd take the car to a regular smog check station. They're usually pretty relaxed as far as the visual check goes.
There's a very long thread in the West section that has to do with passing smog in California. It's stickied near the top of the forum. My personal recommendation is to change your oil and spark plugs the day before the test. Get the car good and warm the day of the test: do some hard driving (high RPMs) for about 10 minutes before you pull into the shop.

take the car to a rotary shop first and get it checked out. make sure its in good shape before the test. a tune up fuel filter and plugs would be a good start. make sure you have a main cat with the air pump working.

You sign a statment telling the DMV you are "PLANNING" to be out of state, (not in nevada or arizona either), durring the time when your registration will become due. You also need an address out of state, for them to send the tags to (could be mail boxes etc or a relative) you send the statment with payment and tags magicly apear with the address. From what I understand this resets the clock, and gives you 2 more years, not sure if this is effected by the cars status as test only or what not. I would avoid driving the car untill you get the tags, but then again you didn't purjur yourself in any provable way because you said you where "planning" to be out of state
Basicly this is what someone whose home state is CA but is stationed in another state would use to register their car.

I must be on a **** list because every car I have ever owned including my 99 taurus DD, several mid 90's dsms and several rx7s have been test only ever since the program was created.
