Sting puts the brakes on illegal racers
Cars impounded for unlawful modifications

WALNUT - Police targeted street racers Tuesday, issuing over 100 citations.
West Covina Police Department along with officers from Azusa, Baldwin Park, were part of the Walnut operation.
West Covina also requested assistance from Irwindale, which has officers trained in spotting illegal engine modifications, according to Irwindale Sgt. Mario Camacho.
The police impounded seven cars, made two arrests on outstanding warrants, and one arrest for driving under the influence, police said.
A car social group called Take A Break Tuesday meets every week at the Amar and Nogales intersection in Walnut, Camacho said.
"The majority are not actually racing, but are congregating and watching," said Camacho.
The group's MySpace page describes the event as an "organized carmeet," and says TAB Tuesdays have been going on since December of 2004.
This is the second straight week that police have shown up to watch the group.
Last Tuesday the police made two arrests for illegal racing, but this week none.
"My feelings are that it is because of the heavy presence of police, that they are not racing anymore," said Camacho.

50 citations and impounded about four cars, according to West Covina police Lt. Pete Mena.
Some of the racing goes through West Covina, Mena said.
The Amar and Nogales intersection is just outside of West Covina.
Most of the citations were for modified exhaust systems and nitrous tanks, which enable vehicles to drive faster, according to Sgt. Camacho.
The police asked group members to open their hoods, claiming probable cause of criminal activity, so they could inspect the engines for illegal modifications.
The citations are mostly correctable, so if violators remove the illegal modifications they will not be fined, authorities said.
The West Covina Police Department plans to continue to show up at TAB Tuesdays.
"It is going to continue, and we are going to continue hitting them until they curb their illegal behavior," said Mena.
