Just trying to gauge interest in who would be willing to come out and help me pluck my FD's ailing engine. I'm not planning on doing this for a few months (say, around January or February 2006, maybe later).

All I'd need is for you to haul your cherry picker (unless you have a truck or something to carry one in... I think I can borrow one from someone/somewhere else) and yourself over to my place in San Bernardino, CA (zip 92408) to help me pluck this summa-a-bitch. If you would be down I would like to have you around to help me re-install the motor (just to have the engine back on its mounts... I can take it from there).

That said, I'd be willing to buy you lots of beer, but beer is for pussies (dicks?). Real men (ah, women too) drink Jack on the rocks. If you don't drink alcohol, I'd be willing to pay you $$$ for your help. Something to think about

Ya, there's no tree. I've got a pretty tiny one car garage to work with... the cross beams on the ceiling don't look too sturdy tho.

Honestly, I don't know. I thought it was some kind of generic name for a valley with excellent cherries. I dunno Just playing along, you know.

 

Are you planning on rebuilding your motor???

 

Those cross beams are plenty strong. You need a strap across three or four of them and then a "I" hook in the middle of the strap. Then attach the $20 hand wench to it. Your motor is only 300lbs with all the crap on it. That one car garage is all you need.

See that chain? it is hooked ot the hand wench that is hooked to the cross members taht is hooked to the cross beams here in the garage.

WAY Easy

 

You take the engine out in one day then you Roll your car back out of the garage and now you have planty of room work on rebuilding the motor.

You need a TV with a VCR so you can watch the Torrington video while rebuilding.

 

Ya, we'll see how things work out. I will most likely rebuild the thing, just to "start fro m scracth", so to speak. There are a few other things going on right now that are keeping this option at bay (time, money come to mind )

Shoot man, you get :thumbsup: in my book. I think the FD with all of its **** is more like 325#s tho :-p I don't think I understand what you mean by "handwrench" though. I was looking at the crossbeams in my garage, and they look like standard 2 x 4s across. The thing about my garage is that the beams span a pretty large distance (they are supported by plywood every 8' or so; every 25' or so they're nailed into a concrete wall). So what I'm worried about is, even with four or more beams distributing the load, the plywood wanting to crush... it's like 1/3" thick (I think). I may have do some baby engineering calcs to back that up :-D I'll be PMing you anyway...

Yep. I'm from San Diego. Damn I miss it down there. Rent is a lot cheaper here though (for comparable living space).

 

Hand wench or "come-along" is what else I heard it called. picture the wench you use if you are stuck in the mud/sand. It has two hooks on either end and a long cable and a spool (like a fishing rod). and that long handle that you crank on. I bought mine at Kragen for $19.95 and it was well worth the bux.

And on your cross beams, just jump up there and grab two of them like you going to do a pull up. wiggle around and shake them and see how sturdy they really are. Now picture two 2x4s bolted across foru of them. and your home.

It is whole lot easier with a cherry picker, you will have it out in a matter of a few pumps
