JunpoweR: The Rotary Man
I had a blown coolant seal. I had dodged the bullet for quite a while with the BlockWeld fix but the problem had now gotten really bad. It was time to do something about the motor and that was going to be a hard choice. As many of you know, a reman or a rebuild will set you back as much or more than an FC is worth.
I looked around at other RX-7s for a while, but it seemed like most of them would be just trading my set of problems for someone elses. One of the cars I looked at was way over priced but had had the motor done by a "backyard" guy.
I contacted the guy that had rebuilt this motor. He didn't turn out to be a very good fit due to location and time but I started looking at the forums and Craigslist more thoroughly and ran across a posting from a guy that seemed a pretty good fit. JunpoweR. The Rotary Man.
Peter Jun, a young guy (relative to me -we went to the same high school a couple decades apart) who loves RX-7s and works out of his house in Oakland -though he's looking for shop space. He needs it.
It took a couple weeks to hook up (Peter was down at Sevenstock for a week and he had to clear some space on the schedule at his place) but once we got going I was pretty happy -in spite if the additional problems that always appear when you start taking something apart. But those were not problems with him -I would have expected any responsible mechanic to point this sort of stuff out.
Peter is obviously way into these cars and is extremely generous with his knowledge of them. Unlike most mechanics who always seem to prefer that the customer make themself as scarce as possible until it's time to hand over a check, Peter seems to enjoy showing me every little detail of any given problem and its solution. He would answer every question and show me good and bad parts for comparison -(he has a lot of used parts on hand). While I don't feel like I could now do the work myself, I do feel like I have a much better understanding of it. This sort of bedside manner probably isn't the best business plan but it certainly made me feel good about the process and him.
I did spend a few hundred bucks beyond the original estimate on ancillary items like a new clutch and a broken motor mount but it just made sense to get those while the motor was out.
I've had the car back for a few weeks and it's running great. Of course the irony is that it was running great before -just displacing coolant, but that's fixed. Peter has contacted me several times to ask about how the car is running and had me bring it back to him to make sure everything is tightened down and to change the oil after the break in. I'll post again at some point should anything change but my experience with Peter was very good. I like him, my car is fixed and I spent a reasonable amount. I'd do it again.

Peter Does it Again
Yeah, he rebuilt my motor. Good job as I said above.
Yesterday I was on the Bay Bridge and popped a fan belt. F*<K! Lot of banging around under the hood for a couple seconds then no power. Engine check light on. I nurse the car off the bridge. Smog/air pump belt is gone. The motor should run without the smog/air pump but it ain't. Obviously, something got whacked. Everything looks intact but looking intact alone doesn't cut it.
Today I picked up a couple belts and Peter went through the car, checked the codes and found the problem very quickly -the flying belt hit a kluged together wiring job done by the PO over 10 years ago and hidden under a bunch of electrical tape. I don't know how long it would have taken me to find this problem. Because he's familiar with the codes, he zeroed in on it right away. He rocks.
All is well. Thanks again Peter.
