Freeway onramp smog checks
#6
really? they just gave you a ticket? no smog ref or anything?
******* alignment shop got my car in the air, saw i had no cats and told me he had a friend with a Z06 (i'm assuming a C5) that had a catless exhaust. He had just bought the vette and put on a really nice exhaust. Said he got pulled over from one of those. saw he wasnt running cats, and took his car to the crusher.
i have no reason to believe he was lying, but i asked a cop about this,( i was checking out the cops rhd subaru for a friend that lives out of state) and the cop told me this is bullshit.
******* alignment shop... kinda worried me, cuz i just spent roughly $7k-8k on my car in the last 2 years. and i'm finally getting it on the road.
shut up wacky. I'm taking the risk. i wont cry if i get caught and it gets crushed.

2cute, where exactly are these machines posted that you know of? I've also only heard of them being in the Irvine Area. I dont kinow for sure, but i think there is one on the on-ramp for the 5 freeway. The newport or rehill onramp?? not 100% sure. I have a friend that lives over there, and i thought he said he saw one there.
Also, do they give you a pic of your thermal picture? Can you request it? that would make an awesome avatar or sig pic!
VacavilleFC: they just take a (thermal?) pic of the fumes coming out of your exhuast and they ticket your *** for being a mass poluter.

per the OC Register:
A month or two ago, the South Coast Air Quality Management District began dispatching vans to freeway on-ramps – that is where motorists accelerate, their cars and trucks tossing out a good sampling of their emissions.
Using beams of light and mirrors, sensors can determine the amount of light absorbed through emissions, a setup that is "pretty accurate'' in figuring out if the emissions surpass legal limits, says Sam Atwood, an AQMD spokesman. "This is technology that has been around for 10, 15 years.''
The ADMD is after vehicles between smog checks that wouldn't pass; the vans are to get samples over the next year or so from 10 percent of the vehicles in Orange, Los Angeles, San Bernardino and Riverside counties – one million in all.
The owners of excessive emissions-passers get a letter (license plates are used to track down suspects) notifying them of their problem. And then they get offered a heck of a deal.
First, a free smog check. If the vehicle fails, the owner can receive up to $500 toward repairs, or up to $1,000 to scrap the vehicle ($2,000 for low-income residents).
The $4-million program is voluntary and might be extended after a year.
Atwood says each van will stay on a particular on-ramp for a week or two.
"We are not advertising the locations or schedule,'' he says.

I'd hope law makers are smarter than that, the junking for $1k has been around in CA for some time, but at least when my friend did it, you had to have owned, insured and registered the car for at least a year.
