True story unfortunately...
It's like 9:00 pm by the time the last folks actually started getting on the road. I'm cruising back toward the freeway along PCH caravanning with Louis and William (Johnson's bros).
We'd been driving a little slow because the fellas were helping me calibrate the speedometer I finally got installed the week before. Anyhow, I'm in the lead with nothing but open road ahead of me when this open pipe GSX-R splits lanes and passes us. I gave it a little juice and the guy gets on it next to me. Quick little blast to gain some speed and then I let off. Dude lets off too and slows way down to let me catch up. We're still all alone when I pull up next too him.
After a full day of hanging out and talking cars for most of it, I've kinda got the blood up. So my inner dumb-*** kicks in I give him three honks and we hammer it side by side. I jump out half a length until his bike winds up a bit and then he pulls away. I'm content so I brake back down to the speed limit and we go on our way. We're heading the same way so now I'm in a kinda slow caravan with biker dude while waiting for Johnsons bros.
We're probably half a mile off PCH when bike and I get pulled over. One squad car flips a u-turn at the light ahead of us and two pull in behind. Apparently they don't mess around in the OC. We pull over immediately. He informs we that we were spotted by motorcycle cop racing. We get spoken to for probably 10 minutes. Apparently they had a fatality not a 1/4 mile from where we got on it. The cop is giving me the guilt trip, asking me if I'm married (yes) and have kids (no) and I'm squirming a little bit. Really was a pretty stupid thing to do. Also kinda wishing I had normal colored hair.
Anyways after a bit he tells me that he's going to go easy and just give us a speeding ticket since we've been co-operating. That still doesn't tell me much because I don't know how bad it's gonna be.
Then I hear his partner ask if he knows how much HP I'm making. Cop says no and the partner comes walking up to my window. He asks about it... I pause for just a moment and then -- as humbly as I know how -- I ask if it's ok if I answer him off the record. He says sure and I answer truthfully ~400 hp. He asks about turbos and I tell him it's an engine swap. He says that's cool, but I still have to behave and walks away.
Main cop who's been talking to me finally comes back and tells me it's my lucky night and the the MC cop that saw us didn't want to come back that way so he'd let us go with a warning...
I say thank you and apologize. They're waiting for me to pull out so I try my best to start the car quietly. It dies because it doesn't like to idle without a proper tune and my new cam's a hair different. So now I've got no choice but to start the car feathering throttle and it barks to life at about 3000 rpm and I'm sitting there just wishing I had a quieter exhaust.
Anyhow they let me go. Cops were probably in their early 30s. There was any number of things they could have busted me for if they wanted to, so I'm pretty thankful for the grace. I can't imagine an underhood check would have been fun.
So I get on the freeway feeling sheepish. Up to this point I had no idea what happened to Johnson's bros, but suddenly they pull up with me. They must have pulled over and waited for us. I flash them a shrug and an OK symbol, but I'm still not feeling real good about my choices for the evening.
I straight up tiptoed the whole drive home.
On net, it was a healthy reminder to be good out there... Oh and if you get pulled over, being polite and turning on your interior lights goes a long way.

Here's a few of my better pics from earlier in the day. The drama at the end didn't rule out the fact it still was and AWESOME day at the beach. Tons of good eating, good company, and we had this end of the beach just about entirely to ourselves. Anyone who missed it missed out.
Thanks to Jesse for letting my try my hand behind the wheel of his EVO. That thing's sweet. What can I say... Car people are good people...

Hey Joel, Louis here.
Im really glad you got out of there with no hassle man. You guys were really hauling *** down that road, and for them to let you off with a warning is truly a blessing. After you got pulled over, I felt like crap. First thing that came to my mind is that I hope they didn't impound your car or look under your hood and hit you with a ref ticket... All that hard work woulda been down the drain if it were to happen...
After you got pulled over, William and I pulled into the starbucks down the road and we were trying to see if there was anything we can do. After, we stop for a few minutes, we decide to head back down to where you were at and see how things were going. Not to burn the spot, we get a quick glance of what is going on, then we just kept driving along. (I noticed Joel had his interior lights on, which ended up working somehow ) Like my bro said, kinda ironic that we were all talking about getting pulled over earlier in the day, and it ended up happening.
We waited at the Chevron station after a block down, in case anything happened or if worst came to worst you needed a ride back home. Not long after pulling in, the bike you were racing pulled into the station and let us know about the news about you guys getting off with a warning. I was at the station waving you down, but I coulda imagined you were far from stoked and just wanted to go home.
After, we jump back on the freeway and try to catch up to you (even though you were tippytoeing your way home) damn my car is slow right now lol.
Glad to see luck was on your side my friend, we wernt gonna leave you behind and get hung to dry.
But damn, your fc was freakin fast!
It was really nice meeting all of you guys, even though I didnt really plan on going. Im glad that I made the trip.

Hey Joel, this is Mike with the silver 3rd gen. sorry to hear about the run in on the way back. I think it's funny how earlier we were just talking about how you can't really get on it around here (there, anywhere on a public road it seems) without getting in trouble No worries, you must have good karma for the cops to let you go Glad you came out, I really like your car. If I ever end up going V8, I may have to enlist your expertise

yeah funny how things happen, i was going to cars N coffee with a friend and we were talking about how we have never been pulled over for no front plate (only) and sure enough it happens like 10 min later. luckliy we were in the "show car" going to the "show" and we got away unscathed.
