bay area meet with rx7 designer?
Anyone interested? just talked to him(Tom Matano) and he is cool with the idea of a get together if anyone is interested. Give me some ideas for time and places. He is waiting for me to get back with him.

you should take charge and throw some dates out and see if they will conflict with anyone. you should also ask your teacher if he could be a guest speaker at 7stock too. i am always down for whatever, just as long as it is not between sept 8-17.

pick some god damn dates!
you sound like a freaking woman...
majoritywise people will more often than not have the weekend off of work and the evenings statistically speaking if that gives you some help in planning.

think he was more of a manager.. supervisor..
engineers designed the turbo system, etc etc, suspension
a mazda artist at the irvine did the exterior design..
interior was designed in japan..
this is what i've heard and read. but then i don't remember all the details.

He was lead designer for mazda in the 8o's and early 90's. He designed the miata and was lead of design for the rx7.
Obviously he didnt design the drivetrain, suspension, or etc... thats a job for the engineers.
Tom is now the director of my program and a nice guy to be willing to meet up to talk to anyone interested.
Looks like people are more interested in being ******** or know it alls then meeting someone who was part of designing the 7.

like i said, what i know is from what i read. now u're insulting me. don't know where that came from.
im saying that the sketch nominated as the exterior and interior design models were designed by mazda artists, a taiwanese guy(exterior) and a japanese guy(interior).
yes tom was lead of the design team for mazda north america. mr. matano deserves credit for heading the rx7 design project which ultimately led to the fd. he did a great job at running his department.
my posts are just adding some information. hell this stuff is interesting to me. why get insulted over it. i forgive u
and i would love to meet him. keep us updated

Tom was lead designer for Mazda N. America from 1983 to 99. The sole designer for the miata, 929, and managed the team of designers for all three generation rx-7s. To be honest Im not sure how much of the rx7 design was his enfluence. But I know he was lead designer and manager.

hey tomm, you should get the miata and 929 people up in the mix to make a bigger meet. i feel you though on the negativity towards your teacher in this thread. other than that scratch is down for whatever.

Tomm, this is really cool! I would say that whenever he is available it would be in our best interest to make the time to be there.
And to anyone that feels the need to be an asshat in this thread... I will advise you against it. It is really nice of Tomm to organize this and even nicer of his teacher to volunteer his time. So please don't make me have to clean this thread up.

I don't know whether we would be able to make this meet, but I think it sounds like a great opportunity to find out about the "making of" the RX7. As a designer of graphics, I'm always interested in the conceptual end of design.
Will check back for time/place, etc.

This a great idea for a meet. I would be down for it. So throw out some dates and have people vote on the date. The times should be a few weeks later so incase people who do want to go but work can try to get days off for it.

Matano is a legend among enthusiast automotive designers. Prior to his most recent foray into academia, Tom led the design teams at Mazda that turned out the third-generation RX-7, the Miata, and the curvaceous MX-6. He signs his letters, "Always Inspired."
His design accomplishments at Mazda include the Miata (MX5), RX 7, 929 Miata M-Coupe concept car, Miata M-Speedster concept car and many other projects by the design teams he managed and created. Mr. Matano hopes to enhance the Industrial Design program, which includes the Transportation Design course, with his knowledge and first-hand experience.

boosted rex- a poll sounds good. Maybe we can have the next three weekheends open. Which ever weekend gets the most votes in the next week I will let Tom know. He will be busier the closer we get to fall semester, so te sooner the better.
I need to know how many people are interested and what weekends they will be available before I go back to Tom.
By the way, anyone who wants to be an ******* on this thread is welcome to do so. However, LET ME MAKE THIS PERFECTLYCLEAR. Whoever comes along to hang out with Tom and the rest of us and happens to talk **** will be severly injured by hands.

everyone who is interested give some dates that you are available I will average them out then get back to Tom. I was thinking about taking him out to eat somewhere we all can talk and ask questions then maybe go for a cruise. Im not sure if he has his 7 in town. He has a few other nice sport cars though including a turbo miata.
