Kid had insurance, I trust?

How do you figure getting rear-ended could have hurt the engine?

Best to you getting her fixed back up, man.

yeah he did, as to how? i dont know it was a pretty hard hit even though my damage doesnt really suggest it, i was VERY lucky, it mashed the **** out of his truck, ill post pics eventually...kinda pissed off and busy atm...

it was definitely making a noise it wasnt making before the impact, its sort of a thumping noise like i hate to say it...rod knock...or hell i dunno, it had less than 20 miles on it, and was running absolutely perfect. not it has something going on i can hear it and feel it in the shifter

Wooooow!! Man that sucks big time, I'm pissed off ): (!

Maybe the force from behind jammed the rear and drive shaft causing it to push the transmission and flywheel into the rear main????

I am truely sorry to hear this bad news, glad you are ok though, could have gotten whiplash, or a back injury.

im floored at how my tail lights and rear sheet metal escaped damage, but it fucked up the paint at the door jams and hood/cowl where panels moved and impacted, kind of dented my exhaust tip and broke one of the hangers for the muffler, the bumper...is under scrutiny...i took it off, its not badly damaged but its not the same shape, i will attempt to straighten it, otherwise i will need to find a straight one...that might take a while...

pisses me off, that road is such a pain in the *** but it is the only road that leads east out of town, so everyone has to go down it, this *** hat was a kid, bout 17, probably on the phone, he had no biz doing what he did, traffic was stopped, been stopped, he was simply not looking forward....i had to tell him to get away from me...i wanted to knock him out..i was furious..as soon as it hit i just envisioned an impossible repair job to my once perfect shell.

now the insurance battle begins, but thankfully..being a car guy i have car guy allies, that have car guy lawyer allies that know people...car guys stick together...

Glad to hear it's at least repairable. With the quality of your work, I'm sure it will come out excellent.

Ha ha! Yeah if at first I saw his front bumper too, that would be my first thought . Good save.

took it out and had a little fun with it last night, was good for my mood, despite me still being a little sore and frustrated, at least you cant see the wounds very well at night and it makes you smile, its fun as hell to drive

unsure, noise is there, run it till it pops i guess, we cant seem to pin down the location and beating on it all night didnt make it worse...so who knows...

i cant wait to get some dyno time to tune it, its not even working hard yet, car is quick

traction is relevant...its not too bad...as long as you dont use the accelerator pedal it doesnt spin

well i have another issue not related to the impact or engine noise..

along the way in this build i overlooked something very important...and when i say overlooked, i was aware of it, i just kept it on the back burner....well it bit me...

i have a bad trans/driveshaft/pinion alignment problem...and there isnt much i can do about it easily.

the transmission ended up a little lower in the car than it was, and possibly at a different angle(i dont have another 7 around to measure), also...im not sure my grannies 8.8 is at the right pinion angle to start with...ill verify that when i can pin down the info i need to do so....

this results in the pinion being about 4 deg north of the trans angle, and almost directly in line with it......it caused an immediate failure of the yoke Ujoint within the 140miles i put on it so i put it on stands to investigate the vibration and discovered my oversight....but an oversight i couldnt really avoid...due to space constraints

SO i needed to change the rear end gears anyway, so it needs to come out now to investigate further my problem....and time is running out for DGRR...and money ran out a long time ago...

im probably going to have to build a 2 piece driveshaft or something...i cant really move anything around in any direction...

sorry neglected this thread a bit, driveshaft problems are as far as i can tell fixed with changed pinion angle via longer LCAs and a shim under tailshaft, apart from a steering vibe common among other REspeed rack owners its pretty much ready for DGRR....

the motor noise..remains...have been beating on it pretty hard and its no worse..probing the engine centers the sound around the lower portion of the right valve cover, not the bottom end, its like a cam lobe is messed up, or it spit out a bucket shim, or the cam is somehow smacking the valve cover perhaps the valve cover baffle...something like that maybe...its possible to remove that side with only a small amount of disassembly so maybe this weekend ill dig into it and see if i can find it....other wise....hell with it..let it ride

well at this point im pretty happy with the way the car works overall, sure there are a few points to address, but its a good combo, fun as hell to drive, docile in traffic, runs super cool thus far, though i havent put it through a summer day yet....we shall see....
has a good gear range top to bottom, and once i sort out the suspension fully should handle like i want it to, though its not bad now, would just like a bit more turn in, but its way better than it was.
so if the noise propagates and becomes terminal i wont be totally crushed on the combo, i will do an autopsy and try to better the next long block to avoid that happening again whatever it may be, and while im at it...the clutch disc has to go...i want something more forgiving

got some paint to re-do the bumper, just going to doll the damages up to make it look presentable for DGRR, i sure am looking forward to seeing all the mazdas in the hills, even if i am now a "traitor" in a lot of their eyes hehehehe
if i dont open the hood it will take a while to be found out muahahaha
