If you'd like some specific info on the 200 4r trans, check out this page:
http://www.tciauto.com/gm/gm_2004r.htm

www.artcarr.com has better (and more expensive) stuff but you probably won't need it.

They came in the 80's Grand Nationals and Monte Carlos, primarily. If you kept it stock, the GN trans has the better valve body (BRF) and larger servo but most people upgrade from stock.

Check out the V8 RX7 section of torquecentral.com - spend several hours searching it, using every search term you can think of. You'll learn a lot. My site has a couple pictures of the FC and the FD I have built but I haven't gotten around to any of the tech stuff yet.

I don't know, but I can recommend a shop:

Check with Performance Solutions Inc in Glen Burnie.

410-766-0554

The owner and operator is Steve Young. His work is unmatched in this area. He is the ONLY person I take my cars to when I don't know how to do the work myself.

Sorry to hear about your daily driver troubles. Toyotas are usually very reliable cars. My only suggestion is that the V8 RX-7 not be a daily driver. Next time you have a day off to spare check your local junk yards and see who has the best prices and what you want. My favorite JY has set prices for each part. They charge 5.00 for a sending unit,20.00 for a complete wiring harness..300.oo for any complete engine...80.00 for a tranny etc etc. Pick n pull type yards often have simular prices nation wide Ive been too many. The only down side to these yards is once they get a "new" car in the yard its ravaged quickly. Many also have a day once a year anything you can carry out for 40.00 or something simular. When you visit these yards and your familliar with your engine you can really benifit. Example I have a few spare GM MAP,TPS,IAC,02,MAF and just about any other sensor on my engine. That way when a sensor does go bad I can replace almost anything in minutes and have little down time. I paid less than 25.00 for all my spare sensors..so if 1 is bad I still did allright $$ wise. Youll discover GM and Ford uses the same sensor on many cars and once you know which cars use the same ECM you can load up on sensors. Nothing worse that having your car run bad and throw a check engine light right before pay day. Then making matters worse paying 75.00 for a 02 sensor and it wasnt even the problem. Just my opinion, hope this is helpful,Shawn

You'd be much better off buying a complete motor and trans package, or at least a complete motor at once. If you buy something like that Chevy motor, you won't have the accessories, brackets, intake manifold, exhaust manifolds, dipstick tube, all of the little things like that. Those pieces add up quick, $20-30 at a time.

ok sounds good i was just wondering i'm such a noob when it comes to engine swaps that dont involve a half cut or any custom fabrication is beyond me i have no tools and no garage but access to both if i need them and i have a good mechanic friend that does this kind of stuff but he lives a bit away from me.

and this rx will no be a dailey driver maybe once a week and on track days

I think you could perform this swap being that its going in a 1st gen...if it was a thrid I'd say dont attempt it without more knowledge and a garage. I would suggest getting a portable garage or something to keep you out of the sun/rain. Mainly because youll be spending a lot of time working on it. You will need a saws all to cut away one of the transmission mounting bulges and a hammer to make a few soft dents for clearance of the tranny case in a couple spots depending on your engine choice. A cherry picker (engine hoist) is a must have also. A welder comes in really handy for your custom exhaust but you could farm that part out...but it will cost you. My conversion took me 2 months start to finish but Ive done this before. It takes most guys longer of course depending on the generation of RX-7 and the engine choice. The man on Grannys site that did his 5.0 conversion in 7 days was a pro auto instructorwho had lifts, welders and any tool needed right there and handy. Im sure he had help from students too for completing it in such a short time. Friends like helping out but it quickly turns into work and the fun part fades...keep that in mind. What ever engine you choose make sure to get a factory manual for it if its fuel injected. Being your first time and the working conditions (outside) you may want to consider a old school carburated engine after all. Much less wiring so less down time. Once your first gem hits 25 yrs old check into collector car insurance to protect yourself from other odiots on the road, who could destroy all your work and your insurance company saying the car is only worth 1,200 because thats the book value. Im sure someone will chime in ...quote me and say Im wrong on that. But do some reading and youll see I'm right, plus it happened to me so Im speaking from personal experience. See if you have a harborfreight store locally and check out thier prices on the temp garage, welder etc etc and you may just be able to swing the whole deal on your budget provided you get a decent buy on the engine/tranny. Once you have a welder you'll be glad to have it and wonder how you ever got along without it. You may also want to go to your local book store and buy a book on rebuilding the engine your interested in. Many aftermarket books specific to your engine..not chiltons.. but anything written by Vance Dickerson will give you lots of detailed info. This way you can read up before starting and learn more. Example youll know to replace your rear main seal since your already changing the oil pan and thier tough to do later with the engine installed on most engines. Food for thought anyways.

No problem, think your the first guy to actually say thanks. Usually some moron just jumps in and starts a argument. Seriously though those books by Vance that pertain to your engine are a good starting point. I bought a few years ago and still refer to them often. They stock them at Barnes and Nobles and if its not in stock they can special order them for you only take a couple days. Any questions ask away,Shawn
