I agree with you that they are money pits, twice as many drive drivetrain parts to break, as well as eating clutches for lunch, and the fact theres really no parts supply for RB engines.

I found some more pictures of the 2007 SS trailblazer front drivelines. I think there could be ways of making it work..

There's a easy way to this but it's still alot of work. Search for fist gen awd millen(think I spelled it right). you'll find a pic of the drive train sitting in a shop. I forget what parts they used but it was a independent front axel and the trans has a built in transfer case. 2 shift ***** too. So I'm thinking it's a truck trans. You would need to move the motor back towards the center of the car.
The diff is off to the side all so.

That would be the easiest way to do it and the weight would me between the wheel.
