Great trap speed...crappy start...ideas?

This is really frustrating... recently got a sweet 94 single turbo that can really move once I get it going (I think I suck of the line). Ran 13.09 @115.6 but can't seem to get a 0-60 under 4.96. I need suggestions for a good start. Once I hit second...if I don't just smoke up the tires...things are sweet and third just flies. Seems like I should be running lower times with that kind of final speed (or is this my imagination?) My 60 foot times are about 2.35 to 2.42...this seems to be somewhat slow. Any suggestions or thoughts?

1. Get better tires
2. Get better suspension
3. Learn to launch better

In no particular order...

drop some tire pressure too in the rear that will help your launch , and slip the clutch a lot to keep the revs up and the power there. but.. what he said is all true too..

I definitely need to work on the launch and I'll drop the pressure a little to see the impact. I usually end up having the RPMs dive when I let out the clutch which really seems to slow things down, but in a second or so it picks up and I'm off. Sounds like I'll have to work the clutch more to keep the RPMs up. The tires are almost new Yokohama ES100 265/35/18s. The suspension is a fully adjustible set up from Tokico...it is set about midway...should I stiffen it or loosen it? Thanks

You should stiffen the shocks.

NO!!!

set rear compression to minimum. If that's not an option go max soft.

Set front rebound to maximum. Again, if you cant adjust compression/rebound seperately go max hard.

You want good weight transfer, not lateral G's.

Removing the swaybars helps immensly too.

Get some drag radials, drop your rear tire tire pressures, slip that clutch & practice, practice, practice that launch.

j.p.

I read an article saying that the most effective way of launching the car was to use the E-brake and slightly slip the clutch while holding your revs to raise boost prior to the launch. I have no idea how that would work because I have never personally tried it. It also may not work very well for a single turbo. But you can definitely make some improvements on your 60' time. That's where your ET comes from. I am essentially stock, running potenza street tires and I pulled a 2.02 60" in 40 degree weather with crappy traction. If you could get your launch down, you would definitely be in the low 12s if not high 11s.

please define what you mean by "slip the clutch." I _think_ I know what it means, but I'd rather be clear.

thanks

What the magazine was saying was to use the E-break to hold the car still...but "slip" the clutch out to let the transmission engage and try to pull the car forward. This will build up boost faster for the launch. I tried it the other day and it sounds good in theory...but its hard as hell to do correctly.

Just need to practice your launches. Find the spot where the motor does'nt bog coming off the line, and where you don't spin the wheels out to the 330'. With my FD and the old setup (Non-seq twins.) I found that the car liked to be launced at around 3.8k. This was on true street tires, and I could get usually nail a 2.0 to a 2.160ft everytime. My best was a 12.6@117mph. CJ

Thanks for all the tips thus far. The holidays have slowed down the driving a bit, but it won't be long 'til I'm out again. I'm 38 and not much for out and out drag racing, but I want to know what the car is capable of and I can't do that without some serious practice.

Anyone have experience with the G-Tech Competition Pro? Got one for Christmas and the two clean runs with it (on the same road, different directions, taking the average) seem pretty consistent with the track times and speeds (about 13.15 average at about 115 or so).

Hey, PhDPsy, what does the GTech figure as your RWHP?

btw; I have a regular GTech Pro (not the competition one)... at one point, I did a RWHP run with it and it said something like 195 or something and I thought that there was no way it was right and that it was a piece of crap (since I already have mods on the car, I figured I should be definitely above stock!!).

then, I went to KDRotary for dyno time and guess what? it said 195 RWHP there... turns out, I had a bad plug wire... after changing the wires and plugs, I came out with 275RWHP.

at least for HP, it seems to be pretty accurate... I haven't testing the 1/4 mile recently, though... so I can't remember really what I got in the past...

The RWHP average over four runs (back and forth on same section to try and eliminate any bias for any minor grade variations) was 362. The car was Dynoed at 387, but the G-Tech accounts for wind resistence and the drag from four wheels so it is often less than what shows on a stationary dyno. Accuracy really depends on getting an accurate weight on your vehicle (with you in it) and a good flat roadway (can go back and forth on a road to help average out any anomolies)

I like the unit, it is fun and the shift light helps me to focus on the road. For the price, you can't beat the features

my FD ran 13.0 @ 118 on street tires........no traction at all! switched to M&H drag radials 12.0 @ 118 blowing the trans lol

you must have drag radials! you will break driveline parts though
