i know being on topic is no good

but wheel spacers are a $340 dollar option on a new porsche....

[heavy sarcasm] and if porsche does it, it must be sound engineering....

Nope. From my personal experience, most of the kids I meet who say they're into "road racing", actually are more into "bench racing". Don't get me wrong. I road race in SCCA nationals. I love road racing. I just think that 90% of the people who claim to road race are busy "building a car for the track" or "researching" instead of actually road racing. They're sitting behind a computer.

Lots of the people I meet drifting are busy actually driving, instead of talking hypotheticals with setup all day.

Just my experience.

Fair enough. I agree, it's all about tightening the nut behind the wheel and that spacers can be safe. Hell, I usually just do hpde stuff so technically I am not a "road racer".

I think the problem that ilia is referring to is that we have way too many perfectionists on this board and not enough realists. Everything always turns into what is the "best" or most "ideal" setup without any throught to money, time, or even personal preference. You have to admit that almost every thread on here turns into something like this where someone asks a very simple question and it turns into a discussion on how to properly setup an F1 car.

My point is, you can't fit enough wheel on the outside of the hub on a stock fender FC to make scrub radius a serious problem. 9" et 20 is about the outer limit, and that doesn't really create scrub issues.

So we should all stop worrying about it.

My other point is that while RX7club will discuss an insignificant issue ad infinitum, others will just drive their car.
You should try driving in new york roads with offsets in the 20's, my +24, 7 inch, shitty tire combination loves driving itself.

I guess if all we wanted to talk about were ultimate setups, we would be throwing lots of different big money manufacturers in the mix. Right now, we're only talking about how to make a certain setup ideal.

The other point I wanted to address is, drifting is much cheaper to get into than racing, by far. Most people just don't have the money to do a full season of SCCA Club Racing. So you have all the poor bastards drifting and gaining more seat time while the bench racers sit at home and save their money for their next racing season, but most likely end up pissing that money away somewhere and never getting out to the track.

Well anyone can call themselves whatever they want, but that doesn't make them that thing that they called themselves. Me, I've been to the track a number of times, but I don't call myself a road racer because I've never done wheel to wheel racing. It just seemed like you were painting the real road racers with the same brush as all the poseurs.

Drifters are often quite clueless about setup and such things, while they may be out there doing it, the sentiment of "setup doesn't matter, we're too busy drifting and having fun" seems to be a common one.

There's nothing wrong with discussing the best setup possible within the budget of the person. Shouldn't that be what's desired anyway? I mean what's so terrible with getting the most for your money?

I get quite a bit of tramlining on my 17x8 30mm offset wheels with 225/45/17's.
