If you are only looking for a street tire, don't waste your money on some expensive tire which you'll never really use. Get something decent, but not over the top. There are a lot of good street tires which are much cheaper than the expensive ones:

Kumho Ecsta XS
Dunlop Direzza Sport Z1 Star Spec
Falken Azenis RT615
Sumitomo HTR Z III - https://www.rx7club.com/showpost.php...&postcount=184
I would add Bridgestone RE-01Rs to that list. These are tires that grip like nuts and can take a lot of abuse.

I agree. I think this is the best "performance" street tire. It does come at a cost though.

on the Pirelli tires. They don't wear right, they understeer all the time, and they like to snap-oversteer when pushed. I've tried everything...

I think I will be making the switch to Sumitomo's. Even though this is the first I've heard of them. The price is just... "fun".

Ha! That is EXACTLY what i was going to say. I have a lot of experience driving on all kinds of tires. I work on cars for a living. Pierelli really arent bad tires but when compared to what bridgestone has to offer i really dont like them as much. The so2's were the softest street legal tire on the market when they came out. What does that tell you about bridgestone?

The big problem with the Pirelli PZero Rosso's are that they quickly fade away. They are decent when new and then turn bad near the end of their life.

Has anyone been driving on the Sumitomo's throughout their life span? Do they fade away as well?

I have Pilot Sport PS2s on the 7 and Bridgestone RE050 on the S2K and I will say they are both great tires. I've actually become of a fan of the Bridgestone products they do a great job of letting you know their limits. Very progressive when it starts to give. I used to buy Nittos and Toyos but I have to say they all left me dissappointed after about 10k. They would dry rot, and become choppy, wear unevenly and my allignment and air pressure was perfect. There's something to be said that you get what you pay for.

BTW has anyone tried the Nitto INVO's? Friend of mine put them on the front of his 350Z and it turns a hell of a lot better with a very progressive feel.

Yea, I have them on my M3. They are great for the street. However, if you plan to do any track days, there are much better dual purpose tires available.

i have tried tons of different "junk" tires and a few very good summer performance tires. all these tires have been driven on rims on my FD save for the rt615's (read below). the kdw-2s were on my FC in the USofA and on my FD here in Japanland.

the track events i go to are similar to Autox, but our average lap times are around 1 minute give or take and we do at least 2 laps, sometimes 3. tires get heated up much more than at a typical 1 lap 45 second autox.

Neova AD07 -- awesome tire. Great dry grip, good wet grip. they wear evenly. they dont get greasy after getting heated up. only problem i have is that they are QUIET!!!! at their limit. I like noise from my tires so that i know when to back off. BONUS -- they smell good when the tires are spinning and the smoke is billowing.

Potenza RE01-r's -- another amazing tire. awesome dry grip (MINUTELY) less than the ad07's. wet grip is a bit better (IMO). a bit noisy during normal driving. they love to talk to you at the limit. they dont smell as good as the neovas. they dont get greasy after getting heated up. BONUS -- tread pattern is wicked !!

Dunlop Z1 Star Specs -- Favorite tire so far. grip as good or better than the above. both wet and dry. they talk at the limit, which i like. they dont get greasy after getting heated up. BONUS -- MUCH cheaper than the ad07s or RE01-rs. i paid 136ish for 245 45 17 and 165 ish for 255 40 17. compare that to over 200 dollars per tire for both the neovas and the potenzas. i have 5 track days and 5 or 6 months of daily driving on them and they still have excellent tread.

RT615 -- i havnt driven on them, but everyone i know says that they get real greasy when heated up. they also have a shitty treadwear rating.

BF Goodrich KDW-2. I dont like these tires at all. i had them in 18s on my FC and then on my FD. they are decent for the rain, and provide a good amount of grip dry but they are JUNK compared to the first 3 tires i described above. when heated up they get real greasy and they chunk very very badly. the entire center ripped out of a set of tires i had and there was plenty of tread left. i will NEVER buy these tires again.

I know you've already bought, but I love my BFGoodrich KDW2s. Mine are almost 4 years old (15-20k hard miles), are in decent shape and still perform very well.

+1 on the Dunlop z1's.
For the budget, the hankooks can be had cheap. For dual purpose, but mostly street, PS2's are nice, but soft sidewalls.

Good analysis, N3. You didn't include your opinions of sidewall stiffness, however; and that attribute is probably just as important as pure grip IMO---nobody wants SUV-like rolling in the turns, afterall. I've heard the RE01r, for example, has a softer sidewall vs the RE050s, yet grip-wise it blows the 50s out of the water. Greenspeed, you mention how the PS2 has a soft one. Makes one wonder why most ultra high-po tires seemed to have gravitated in that direction.

I run RE050 PPs, btw, and can say that the sidewalls aren't really soft per se, but they don't seem to quite have the stiffness of the OEM Potenza S07s.

my next purchase will be the Neova AD08s. everything i have read says those things are amazing.

i went to the same tire mounter all 3 times. he mentioned that the RE01-rs had the stiffest sidewall of the 3. he had a bit of trouble getting the tire on the wheel. i havnt noticed too much difference between body roll between the three. my suspension is pretty stiff in that aspect. id have to drive all three again to give a good analysis as i havnt driven on the re01rs in 7 months and the Neovas in about 18 or so. i dont have a long daily commute, so my tires last quite a long time. even when running montly autoX type events.
