Like the title says. I am thinking either a 8.5 or 9 inch wide slick.

By "slick", do you mean a drag tire or a road racing tire?

drag: Mickey Thompson E/T Streets 255/50 16 or BFG Drag 255/50 16

road race: 225/50 Hoosier RS304

There aren't any pure slick tires that will fit the stock rims, the above tires are DOT-approved.

You can fit a 26x10.5 drag slick.... Not sure whether a 28" tall will fit.

Hoosier QTP's (Dot legal slick) makes a 27x11.5 which I believe is only 9.5" wide.

Do some searching on here and you should find a few others that have posted on this.

You can run aluminum space saver spares up front to shave off some weight as well .

I am going with the slicks because I don't feel there's any real way of launching a stick car hard and having it hook on drag radials. But can I really fit a 10.5 inch tire in the wheelwells without rubbing?

I don't drag, but there was a Rotary Performance FD in SCC a while back with 265's in the back on stock rims. It looked a little silly.
