Question Tokico Shocks/Springs on FD - Illumina vs D-Spec/HTS

Tokico has recently introduced shock/spring packages for the FD. I'm in the market for some new shocks/springs but am looking for more information/experience on these products before I decide what to buy. I called Tokico's tech support at their California and Michigan offices, but the guys I talked to at both sites were less than accomodating so I'm turning to you guys to fill in some info. gaps for me.

Right now (according to the Tokico website) Tokico offers two types of shocks for the FD RX-7:
Illuminas and D-Spec/HTS
They also claim to offer shock/spring combination packages for both types of shocks.

I have experience with the Illumina shocks (on my 1st gen RX) and know they have been around for a long time. What I'm looking for is specific expreience (or informaiton) on the Tokico springs and/or the D-Spec/HTS shocks.

More specifically, I would love to know the spring rates of the Tokico springs.

Hi there,

I might not be able to assist completely as I do not know the spring rates.

However,

The Dspec has a wider damping range as well as more incremental adjustments than the Tokico Illumina.

If it was me I'd definitely try out the Dspecs, in Japan known as the HTS damper, is widely used as a quality motorsports OE replacement damper.

I'm starting to believe the Tokico springs must be very, very new since no one (not even the Tokico people I spoke to) knows the spring rates.

I was all set to buy the Tokico D-Spec shocks and RSR-Down springs when I stumbled across the ad for the Tokico shock/spring combo sets. Now I'm really curious what spring rates Tokico is using with their springs and if they are anywhere close to the RSR Down rates.

I'm a scientist - I tend to analyze things to death ---- can't help myself. Still: if anyone has spring rate info for the new Tokico springs it would make my day...

My car is only driven on the street (I live in the mountains so "street" is not really accurate by most people's thinking, but no track time) so I don't need to go with a race set up with coilovers and spring rates that will loosten dental work. There are two mountains between my house and my office (actually between my house an anywhere else) so "spirited street" driving is the usual mode.

I was leaning hevily on the Tokico D-spec shock and RSR-Down spring set up since it seemed like good quality parts at a reasonable price.

For background: my car has the stock motor and twin turbos, but with all kinds of bolt on reliability and performance enhacing parts to the tune of 350rwhp and 302rwtq (dyno tuned by Dave at KDR Performance).

Talked to Tokico.

Their story is that the shock/spring combo kits for the FD RX-7 are still in the last stages of development. The guy said they had all the parts, but were still deciding how/IF to market them. This sounds like a thin excuse for not knowing the spring rates to me, but that's what the man said.

So, I guess - if anyone else is interested in these Tokico packages they should contact either Tokico directly or their favorite Tokico dealer and specificially request information.
