There's actually alot of info there... very informative. Basically, it's just a little better in every area than the T1S... sort of like the comparison between an S02 and an S03.

T1R's are not available in the US, they are however available in Canada.
I almost went to Toronto get a set a few weeks ago but the price disparity between Canada and the U.S. is insane.
It would have run me mid 6's here in the US versus over 1K in Canada and thats after the exchange.

sorry about that...the forum was messing up when I tried to add the link...
its not alot of info just pics of the tread and fact that the weight is slightly higher. The tires have been available in other countries for a while hence some of the "feedback"

Is this tire actually meant to replace the T1-S?
The little bit of info. I've seen has not said so directly but there is nothing official on Toyo's U.S. site or even mention of the T1-R. The info. I've seen on Canadian tire stores says its for sport sedans and coupes but no mention of it being an ultra high performance tire or T1-S replacement.
Onlinetires.com's "specials" page says the T1-R in 195/50/15 will be availabe late May 2005 for $60 but no mention of other sizes.
I'm very interested since its time to order tires soon and I've been very happy with my current T1-S's.

Well, just saw 7racer's link when I posted. It seems to answer my questions. Hopefully all sizes will be available in June since they already sell them worldwide. My Volks are due here in June but who am I kidding, I won't need tires until August based on Volk delivery times.

The Toyo T1-R tires are on the car
I didn't have a chance to drive them very far, as I had to get my other car, and pick up my old tires. I will give my impressions after I have had a chance to drive on them for a while. They look nice, for what that's worth

I didn't get wheels. The tires were installed on the wheels I already have.
If we are going to talk about looks, the T1-R looks like it has more tread on the outer blocks on the tire. I would think that this would provide better dry traction.

Just got off the phone with "Hideki" at Toyo. He's one of the tech guys. The main change on the T1-R is the stiffer sidewall. Toyo felt that the T1-S had too soft of a sidewall, and that the tire would provide better response time by making it stiffer. The change in the tread pattern is mostly just a cosmetic change.
He also said that a priority for the tire was to avoid having the tire follow (or grab) grooves in the road. According to him, many of the ultra-high performance tires follow grooves. Toyo didn't want this.

nice. that was my one gripe when i last used the toyo t1-s on my bmw. the turn in was not as crisp as the michelin m3 spec tires (forget the model name) b/c the sidewall was softer. made for a great ride though.

Kumho MX will perform at a higher level for longer (unless the T1R is MUCH better). I've run both, plus most every R compound and many slicks. Check the SCCA Street Tire class forum for tire discussion, #1 MX, #2 Azenis RT215(disc) #3 Azenis RT615(new), and some other(three times the price) high end tires. I'll probably go RT615 for the street, since it is the only 315-30-18 tire out there for less than 300.00 in a street compound (for my MKIV). Carl

One of my considerations was noise. I didn't want "all out" performance street tires. Noise and a comfortable ride were secondary considerations. So far, the tire is quiet. It as also smoother riding than my Bridgestone 750's.

I don't really understand why people are concerned with how a tire performs on wet roads ........ unless you are on the track. If you are on the street, pushing your car to the limits on wet roads, you are going to crash.

why do you assume, i'm pushing the car in the wet?
hydroplaning happens at speed limit pretty easily. the roads here in NY are poorly engineered/constructed and encountering 1-2" of standing water or more is pretty common. a good wet weather performance tire like the T1S keeps the car more stable in these conditions.
although i'm not dumb enough to push my car in the rain, i'm not the kind of person who is afraid to drive in the rain period

My comment was not meant to be directed at you. I sincerely apologize if it came out that way. I have seen many posts this forum where people brag about driving 140mph in the rain. Driving fast in the rain is foolish. In my mind, "wet handling" refers to wet grip while cornering. In my mind, cornering fast enough to test "wet grip" is really stupid

Hey Adam,
But some of us do daily drive our cars, rain or shine. Wet weather handling is important to me, as there are differences between tires, even in "normal" driving. Also, people in this state drive like morons in the rain -- sometimes you have to drive "at the limit" in order to dodge some idiot who just did something stupid. It's those times where I would like to have a tire that's very good in the wet as well as dry.
I will probably have a daily driver for next "winter", so I may not have to worry about it in the future, but for now, I do care about wet handling -- I think it's great that Tire Rack performs full testing on a "wet" track.
