Thumbs up SBG Comp BBK: Eye candy and comparo pics

Recently installed my SBG Competition BBK, and was very pleased with ease of install and product quality. I haven't driven on them yet, but wanted to share a few pics with you guys.

Btw, aside from the obvious difference in pad surface area, the delta for pad thickness is awesome:

* new oem pads are 14mm thick overall with a 4mm backing plate for 10mm of pad material.
* Ferodo DS2500 pads for the SBG Comp setup are 20mm thick overall with a 5mm backing plate for 15mm of pad material.

What are your thoughts vs the Racing Brake setup? I'm on the fence as I like the RB open slot rotor design....

Nice wheel and brakes set up. What are you using for the rear brakes? Would love to hear your feedback on how well they perform on the streets and the tracks. Now go out there and drive.

No, The point of Big brakes is to add material to act as a heat sink eliminating brake fade.

Wow. I thought that might happen with that design. I hope nothing else got damaged when the rotor went.

If you gonna post a pic like that, you could at least describe what happened to that particular vehicle or the circumstances that caused that kind of damage? Your pic is giving this product negative press with no details. How do we know that vehicle didn't slide into a curb or something? Just saying!

I think those are two different cases since one is slotted while the other is slotted and cross-drilled.

Those are not my pictures. I remembered seeing this and grabbed the pics from the forum from an earlier posting. My understanding is that this happened during an auto-x (at least for one of the shots). And yes, that is two separate occurrences. However, I believe these were OEM sized rotors so take that into consideration.

I simply re-posted images that were already public and stated my personal opinion based on multiple occurrences of failure.

Of course, I am not saying that all Racing Brake is bad. Im sure there have been other rotor failures from other brands. Its is just that I do not like the center mount hub design from an engineering perspective. Go to an ALMS or Rolex race and take a look at the brake rotors on all of the race cars... I can promise you that none of those cars run a similar design.

Sorry for leading this topic off track, lets get back to the original discussion.

^ Thx for the clarification! . I did a google search on these racing brake rotor failures and couldn't find anything. I'm in the market for some upgraded brakes since my fd is still on stock brakes. I've been following the racing brake set-up for awhile. Really looking forward to Goodfellas performance assessment.

I think those are the Chinese knockoff "Racing Break" rotors

Those are my pictures of Racing Brake rotors. These were the stock size rotors on an FD AutoX car. They were both brand new and both snapped on the first run. Obviously while you are under braking and you lose braking on one side, the car jerks. Luckily it was an AutoX and not a track event. If this would have occurred at a track event, the results could have been much worse.

IIRC wasnt the issue identified by racingbrake as a bad batch of castings? Still should not have happened, but Im thinking the issue has been identified and remedied. There are alot of guys using racingbrake rotors on some pretty serious cars without issue.

Thanks for posting some pics Rich! Do you still have that pic of them behind a 17 inch wheel?

We're going to be there in mass this year. I think seven or so of us are headed down... Seven dudes, one RV, I can't think of a better way to spend a weekend lol.

In this case no, our brake package is about 2lbs heavier than stock per corner. The majority of the extra weight comes from the discs as the AP caliper weighs just under 5lbs. I'm not aware of any upgraded brake kits that are lighter than stock and as stated above in this case heavier isn't necessarily a bad thing.
