I think that is their rating, but they only lasted me about 6k miles before they were totally bald. They would break loose on my car all the way thrue 3rd gear, which probably explains the low life span on the rear. The fronts still look new, lots of tread, i'm hoping they will last another 20-25k. I tend to drive the car hard frequently, so I go thrue lots of rear tires. I've been searching for a good compound that will keep the rear end on the ground, and these kumhoes are doing the trick. Granted they will only last about 3k miles, but i'd rather be changing rear tires often rather than spinning the wheels and going no where.

You guys are aware that making treadwear comparisons between brands is completely meaningless, right? There is no absolute treadwear standard. Each company sets an arbitrary wear point and then rates their tires relative to that point. There is no correlation between brands.

BTW, when my SP8000s wear out, I'll be getting S-03s.

Thanks everyone

Your help is appreciated. It seems like the best bet is Potenza S03 Pole Positions. but at over $800 a set mounted, I will probably have to look elsewhere for now. Damn-----I hate compromise, but with a wife with a Stealth, 2 daughters in college and another daughter just turned 16 (each with an eclipse, talon or laser) keeping rubber and insurance on 5 cars is probably gonna keep me from getting the S03s. Ouch! When did rubber get this high---Oh I remember, I didn't used to buy Y rated tires.

Ahh, if on a budget, then Yokohama AVS Intermediates in 255/40-17. They're $103 each! I have these now on my 9 x 17 SSR IA2s, and am quite happy with both their road and track capabilities.

You are correct. The Government controls the standard when it comes to the Traction and temp ratings. The Treadwear or also known as the UTQG is in comparison to other tires in that particular brand. So comparing the Mich Pilot sports with a UTQG of 220 VS the S-03 UTQG of 220 does not mean they wear the same. Only comparing within the same brand will it show a pattern. Otherwise is just a point of refernance not a determining factor. But the higher the # the longer the wear. R compounds will be in the 0 to 60 UTQG and street compounds will be in the 140-300 range. Longer wearing Touring tires will be in the 320-550 range. These are not strict points but more of a general idea of where the tires fall into as far as the treadwear #'s.

Someone posted on this forum about getting KDW's for $108/tire. Can anyone confirm this? I searched for a bit, but no luck ....

Well, for cheap, and supposedly decent performance for a street tire .... Kumho Ecsta Supra 712 ... 225/50WR16 for $80/tire or 245/45WR16 for $93/tire. Although, everytime I see these, they're on the asphault while their owner is on the course running race tires.

My DE student had the Ecsta Supra 712s on his Mustang last weekend. Let's just say he had the tires singing, but we weren't going very fast through the turns (it's a shame because my student's pretty good for a beginner)!

I seriously recommend the AVS Intermediates for anyone on a budget looking for outstanding ultra high performance rubber. The 225/50-16s are a steal at $85 each from the Tire Rack.

Here's my story on the AVS I's. I burned up my Hoosiers before my PCA weekend was over. I slapped on my road wheels/tires (SSR IA2s 9x17 with Yoko AVS I's 255/40-17)--and lo and behold the 3500-mile old tires, were only 2 seconds slower than Hoosiers--just before they corded out! Honestly that's impressive for a road tire. The other drivers on track couldn't believe I was running on road tires...one in particular was in utter shock, as he had A032Rs on his 911 He says to me, "I knew the AVS were good tires, but DAMN that's f*ckin fast!"

Kyle,

Well yeah, there's some skill involved

I'll be heading in your direction next week. I'll be a participant with the Mid Ohio Region Porsche Club Drivers Education Thurs/Fri, 9/10-May-2002. The course will be at Mid Ohio Sports Car Course http://www.midohio.com/

We'll be staying at the Bellville Ramada Inn Click on this URL for more information http://www.morpca.org/main.htm

Since I'll be one of possibly two FD Rx7 owners in attendance, I won't be hard to find...especially with my MDC logos on the front and back windshields
