VA Question About Tires (FD)

Currently I have 225 / 50Z / R16 on my RX-7.

I definately need to get new tires.

Would you recommend something other than Z rated?

Such as V or Y?

Thanks.

In the 225 range, I would suggest looking at:

Falken Azenis RT-615
Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3
Kumho Ecsta XS
Dunlop Direzza Sport Z1 Star Spec

There aren't many options for upsizing to 245's anymore, but you can still find a few tires in that range.

Cool tires

try Hancook Ventus rs 2 or the new rs 3 i think. Best street tire for grip right now is the Toyo R1R, then Kumho xs, Bridgsetone re-11 and Dunlop strar spec.

245-45-16 is optimal size as i have had these for years on a 3rd gen R2.

autocross or track racing, go with kumho 710's squared...

Mahjik,

Thank You.

I was looking at exactly the same ones that you've mentioned in your response.

Here are the prices I found. What are your thoughts?

[1]. Goodyear Eagle F1 GS D3 $197.95

[2]. Dunlop Direzza Sport Z1 Star Spec: $170.95

Is that price per tire only or is that including mounting/balancing? That seems high if it's tires only.

Mahjik,

I believe that is for tires only.

I got these prices from www.justtires.com

I'm going to see if they can give me a package deal for 4 tires.

Do you have another place that you can recommend?

Thanks Much.

Mahjik,

Great web site. Thanks.

Would you recommend putting something other than a Z rated tire on an RX-7?

Such as V Rated.

For street applications, V rated are just fine.

The just tires out here will price match any tire from just about anywhere. I got my GS-D3's for $150 a piece and I talked them into free mount and balance. Just need to pressure them with what you know.

I'll have to disagree with mahjik on this one.

Run either Z, W, or Y rated. V rated tires are only good for 149 mph, and arent nearly as sticky as the other speed ratings I mentioned.

Go with the Dunlop Star Specs. Awesome street tires, you'll love them

For the 225/50/16, the Dunlop is a V rated tire.

I called the local Just Tires and they agreed to the site Mahjik recommended above.

GS-D3's at $165.00 per tire. Where did you get yours at $150.00 per tire?

But they are going to charge me for the mount and balance.

How did you convince them to do free mount and balance?

Around here everyone is in need of money. I just told them I would pay this amount and that if they wanted the sale they would have to mount them free.

I love the star specs. I got most of the autox guys that I run with into the tires. Everyone has loved them. A bunch of the Japanese Gymkhana guys are also running them. I want to get rid of my brand new RE01rs in order to buy another set. they are that awesome.

Would like to say Thank You to Everyone that helped me.

Many Thanks to Especially Mahjik and GoodfellaFD3S. You were a great help to me.

I decided to go with the Dunlop Direzza Sport Z1 Star Spec.

$124.00 per tire.

My local TiresPlus did not have them in stock so they are being ordered from Tennessee. Should be here by Tuesday.

Does anyone know if there is any other place I can get them for lower than $124.00

Mahjik and GoodfellaFD3S again, great many Thanks to you both.

What size are you looking for?

Right now I am running 245/45/17 up front and 255/40/17 in the rear on a set of RZ BBS wheels. I have 15 mill spacers in the rear. Car sits on old Toda Fightex coilovers that I cannot adjust. They will be replaced after my (planned) single swap. I want to run a 225/235 40 for better turn in response and 235/245 depending on the front setup. I may stay with 255 but I dont know how the car will feel with that much difference in the front vs rear.

Right now it pushes SLIGHTLY at the limit but the car is VERY predictable and easy to control. I have been in the top 3 (usually a second or so behind 1st) for the past year. However, the 1st place guy jumped in my car and (in a few short runs) beat me by almost 8 seconds. However, I was having a horribly off day, and he has been driving for about 10 years longer than I have. I dont feel too bad about it. It just means I need to get faster.

MX3, you will LOVE those tires. What sizes are you ordering?

Mahjik and GoodFellaFD3s,

I got the Direzza Sport Z1 Star Spec 225/50R-16 92V BSW tires installed yesterday.

Right away, even before driving the car, I noticed that there is definately more room now from the edge of the tire to the body of teh car.

I have to tell you right away that the other tires looked a lot better.

They only reason I got these ones are because GoodFellaFD3s recommend them so highly.

Mahjik recommended the GoodYears.

The ride is defnately good.

Today, I'm having the D2 Coilovers installed.

Thus far I'm only going to say that I have a bit of regret that prehaps I should have gone with the GoodYear Tires.

Let's have some feedback.

Your biggest regret is going to be choosing those d2 coilovers. They are both good tires, I would have went with the goodyear tire, I plan to run their ps2 tires for my bbs lm's when they come in.

I would sport any of the tires I listed in post #2 above. There are some differences between them, but it just depends on your use of the tires as to which tire fits the bill.

How can you regret getting such a great tire by how it looks? You should read comparison tests or check out who the top dogs in auto-x and time attack are and see what they are running. Those goodyears aren't even mentioned in tests any more and nobody I have seen recently runs them either. The Dunlops were top dog recently but new tires like the Kumho XS are surpasing them now.

Compared to the goodyears this was the right choice if you plan on doing any sort of driving events like auto-x. The goodyears are pretty good in the rain tho so if your car is a daily driver they may have been better. Either tire is great tho.

If you want to regret something regret downgrading to those D2s. The stock FD setup is better.
