question about gram lights offset and tire fitment

i was thinking about buying a set of gram lights 57c's in 17x8.5 and 17x9.5. the best offset for the front wheels i saw were 40 and the rear is only available in 38. i was wondering if these would fit an fd without any problems. also need to know if 255/40 and 285/35 tire combo sounds about right for those wheels

285 seams a bit wide for a 9.5" wheel. I ordered 18x9 and 18x10 with the offsets volk reccomends

i've seen people stick 295's on 10" wheels, so i figured it should work. just wanted some opinions

or how about the 57 pro's, 17x9 and 17x10? they offer 35 and 40 offset on either. will they fit okay?

gram lights are not FD friendly wheels, the 17x9 won't fit very well up front.

Your first sizes/offsets would work but your tire sizes are too big (they don't make a 285/35 17 BTW). Stick with 245/40 and 265/40.

my bad, they were 255/45 and 285/40. i want to actually get some more rubber under the car tho. if i'm gonna spend the money on aftermarket wheels, i'd at least like to make it worth the while.

why don't the 17x9's fit well? not enough offset choices?

There are much better wheel choices for the FD, IMO. Also, your profiles are too high and they don't make a 285 in a 17" that will fit well.

Running proper offset 17x9 (+45 to +50) all around with 255/40 is plenty of tire. If you really feel you need more, then you will need to run 275/40 in the rear but this will eliminate tire rotation and raise your final drive ratio a bit.

The other option is to go to 18", in which case you could run 255/35 on 18x9 and 285/30 on 18x10.

Please look through the suspension archives. There are PAGES of good info to look through.

i've done a lot of searching or i wouldn't have posted. i found some 245/45/17 and 275/40/17 tires that would work good, but i want some nice wheels that fit those tires perfect on the fd. the only wheels i've come to like are the gram lights, for the money

so if i get a 17x9 with a 255/45/17 up front with 40mm offset and 17x10 with a 275/40/17 with 35mm offset in the back, would i be able to compensate with fender rolling and possible spacers if needed?

sorry if i come across a little stupid in regards to offset and wheel sizing, but it's always been something that's confused me. the wheels will see some track time so i need as much meat under there as possible. rolling fenders and using spacers with longers studs don't worry me if that's what it takes to get them to fit

Like I said, you need to spend some more time researching. Read up the tire and wheel tech at www.tirerack.com They do a pretty good job explaining it.

Lower offset wheels are already pushed out to the fenders too far, so spacers would be going the wrong direction.

How much do Gram Lights cost? I'm sure we could recommend alternatives. I did tell you that your first sizing would work -- 17x8.5 +40, 17x9.5 +38. Appropriate tire sizes would be 235/45 or 245/40 front and 265/40 rear.

As far as other wheels go, you can get SSR GT1s or Competitions in either 17x9 +45 offset all around or 17x8.5, 17x9.5, +42 offset. You can also get the Comps in 18x9.5 +50 offset all around with 265/35s.

17x9 +40 would fit up front, and a 17x10 +35 should fit with rolled fenders.

I've seen quite a few people have rubbing problems with 17x9 +40, ideally you would run +45 to +50.

Also, I know Xx10 +38 requires rolling the fender, so +35 offset would really be pushing it, even with rolled fenders.

i found a nice sizing calculator the showed how much further the tires will be moved out. i'm going to do some measurements tomorrow and see if i can make them squeeze with rolled fenders. if not, i can custom order a set from a local shop and specify the offset

Now that I think about it, I think I did have some slight rubbing running a 17x9 +40 with a 245/40/17. It's been a while since I'e owned an FD. Nothing a heat gun and a baseball bat wouldn't fix.
