I'm pretty sure (correct me if im wrong, please) but just from what I've seen around the shop here is when the aspect ratio decreases (say 60 to a 40) the tire width increases. Like for example I have a set of 225-60-16's that are 7 inches wide from tread edge to edge and a set of 215-40-17's that are 7.5 inches from edge to edge. At least with these two sets of tires there are two main benifits with useing the 17, 1: wider tire, more contact patch 2: lower profile tire (less camber, decreased tire roll) and 3: (could be good or bad) smaller diameter tire IE: less weight, shorter final drive gearing, and the ability to go lower with the suspension, but the speedo will be off.

On a side note the 225-60-16's on my car have rubbed 1/4" deep grooves on the inside of the tires on the front due to hard cornering, they didn't touch when the car was sitting still, so if your wheels/tire are really really close, remember that things change when everything is in motion.

i've thought about the possibility of my tires actually rubbing when cornering and such but don't remember seeing any evidence that there was contact. i never really looked for it but i think i'll take a gander tomorrow.

Does anyone know what kind of wheels these are? I dont like the car I found them on, but I do like the wheels. I looked for about 2 hours non stop and came up unsuccessful.



PS: I'm probably getting Falken Azenis(sp) 225/45's. Those fit, im pretty sure.

Ill stick with the 17" x 9" rear and 17" by 7.5 in the front. Its quite a difference but seems to work real well...

 

A 225/60/16 tire should be 225mm wide with a 135mm sidewall, and a 215/40/17 should be 215mm wide, with an 86mm sidewall. Are you sure you're reading the tires right? A 225 should always be wider than a 215, regardless of aspect ratio.

 

Yeah, Regamaster EVO's to me too.

Summit Racing has them down to 5.5mm.

Regarding hub center bore, my hubcentric adapter rings say 59.60 mm and they fit perfectly.

 

Okay, I've dug a little and wish to share about tire sizeing. I was wrong about the width increasing as the aspect ratio decreases. I was using two different tire performance types to compare (all season vs ultra high performance). From what I have read, it is very possable to have a 215 wider than a 225, 235, and even as much as a 245 in extreme cases as far as tread width is concerned. Lets take a 225/50/16 for example. 225= the sectional width in mm, not tread width. 50= percentage of sectional with, or 225 x .50. and 16 is, well, you know what it is. Sectional width is the width of the tire from sidewall to sidewall at its widest point on a given rim. A friend a yokahama told me that there is NO standard for what rim size is used when calculating sectional width. Most manufacturers spec a 195-225 tire on a 6" wide rim, but that also changes with performance type. In other words if a 225 tire that was spec'd on a 6" rim was put on a 7" rim would yeild a sectional width of 235 and 245 on an 8" rim (10mm per inch) . But the tread width would not change. So in other words a 215 tire spec'd on a 6" rim and a 225 spec'd on a 7" rim could indeed have the same tread width, and pretty much in essence be the exact same tire size. Sidewall thickness is also an important point, as a thicker sidewall would not bulge as much, and in turn, make the tread width wider. Like a 225-40-16 bridgestone SO2 pole posistion would have a greater tread width than a 225-70-16 bridgestone turanza. So hey, maybe treadwidth can increase as the aspect ratio decreases, since the sidewall is stiffer on lower series tires. Anyway I now concider myself to be informed. I guess "wider" isn't always better.

I have an 86 base, 4 lug, and I'm looking at some 16x7 +40's. Anybody have this setup and what size tires would work to look good and have a safe clearance? They don't stick out any, do they? Or does somebody have a better setup? The 14's I have on there now are definitely too small, but 17's look abit too big to me.

 

16x7 +40 is the stock rim size of the Turbo II. You can fit 205/55/16, and sometimes 225/50/16 depending on the tire.

 

32 gtr's are 16x8+30

just curious as to why you disapprove of streaching tires?

I Thought that id Replace the mint stock 15" & buy some 17" x 7" 5 x 114.3 , (offset ??) wheels to put on my stock 1990 FC GXL .. Any fit Issues with these tires or wheels ??

Ya, I don't understand that either. I would much rather stretch a tire on a wider wheel. It handles really great.

I had a 255 on a 17 x 9.5 (now) 275-40 on the back...It was great
