max tire size on a 17 x 8?

Hey guys. I'm getting a bit tired of running on 'slicks' and having my car hydroplane at speeds greater than 50 mph when there's even the smallest hint of rain. I'm still running stock 16s right now, but if I have to buy a new set of tires anyway, why not get the wheels too!! So, I want to go 17 x 8 and 17 x 9. I currently have 245/45s on the stock 16s. Does anyone know if you can fit (without mushrooming and other unwanted deformations) a 245/40 on 17 x 8s? The recommended tire size is 235/45, but the 245 works out to be closer to stock diameter, and gives me a bit more meat up front.

Anyone run a 245/40R-17 on a 17 x 8 rim before?

Thanks for the help.
Ken

Well, if you check tire sizes at the tire rack.com, they give you recommended wheel widths.

Both the Bridgestone S-03 and Pirelli P-zero list an 8-inch rim as acceptable for a 245/40 17.

However, why get a 17x8 for the fronts? Why not get 17x9 for all four and run 245/40 or 255/40?

rynberg - thanks for the info.

The reasons I don't want to run larger wheels up front are:
1)plenty of grip already. I like the bit of understeer that having the 'smaller' tires up front gives me (I'm probably going to run 265/40s in the rear). It allows me to use the throttle a bit more easily to place the back end where I want it. Just my driving style really.
2)I'm planning on getting a new spring shock package (which of course lowers the car a bit) and I'd rather not worry about fitment and rubbing issues.
