How To: Mustang Wheels on an FC

I thought I’d post some of the knowledge I’d gained in researching the feasibility of putting Mustang wheels on an FC. This seems to be the cheapest way to get some good quality 17’s on an FC. You’ll need the following:

Wheels: Mustang 17x8”, 5x114.3mm bolt pattern, 30-32mm offset, 70.1mm hub bore (all 1994-current have those same specs, choose on style, weight and price)
Tires: 225/45/17 or 235/40/17 or 245/40/17 or 255/40/17
59.6/70.1mm hub centering rings (optional)
ARP long wheel studs for late model Corvette, Camaro, and Firebird (optional)
Open ended wheel nuts (optional)

You’ll need to get new tires as the stock mustang ones (245/45/17) are too wide to fit in the front and are the wrong diameter. You can use a 225/45/17 or a 235/40/17 and they are within 1% of the correct diameter. The 225 will almost definitely fit up front without rubbing, but the 235’s will be a bit of a gamble. You can put larger tires in the rear, such as a 245/40/17 or 255/40/17 and that’ll be extremely close to the stock tire diameter. I went with 225/45/17’s all ‘round and I haven’t had any problems yet, although I’ve read that with lowered cars there can be problems with rubbing on the 225’s. You’ll want to get some hub centering rings to help prevent vibrations due to an off centre wheel. If you insist on going without the rings then tighten the lugs with the wheel in the air. I’ve read that with the stock lugs, there isn’t quite enough thread engagement for it to be considered safe (you should have at least 8 full turns). I went ahead and put the ARP studs in before hand and they fit like they were designed to go in RX-7’s. The longer studs will need open ended nuts. I’ve seen a picture of the 17x9” cobra rims on the back of an FC, but they’d never fit up front.

The wheels can be bought on eBay, from a local wreckers, or from one of the many Mustang forums online.
You should be able to get the rings at a local tire shop, as any that sell wheels should be able to get you some. You should be able to pick up the open ended nuts there too.
The studs can be bought from Summit, or a local store that carries ARP merchandise.

Personally, I really like the way my 5 spoke GT wheels look on my car, and the best part is was that it didn’t bankrupt me. I am not responsible for the accuracy of this information or for what you do with this information.

I don't know, it'll all depend on the tire size, you'll not be able to use 235's up front, that's for sure(unless they're really narrow 235's). The problem you'd get is rubbing of the corner of the tire against the fender lip when the suspension compresses. On my car, with 225/45/17 Falken FK451's, the tires are nearly flush with the fender edge, but the tires tuck in a bit when the suspension compresses, so I hope it won't rub (it'll be close though). Like I said earlier, I've read other posts from people commenting that with these rims and tires, and lowered cars, they got rubbing on big bumps and during hard cornering. Hopefully someone with that setup will comment so we'll know, as I'm curious too as I'd like to get the RB springs and sway bars one day.
