how can you tell if something will fit your car?
i'm a complete newb at this... with all the numbers, i have most of them figured out except for how to tell what offset is going to work on my car. i have a 93 FD and was looking at wheels that come in an 18x8+38 and a 18x9 +35, how can i tell if these will/will not work on my car? where can i find a nifty little learn how to do it yourself thing?

Here's a good guide:
Well here it is guys. This deserves to be here in hopes to save several some heartaches with wheel fitments and questions. It's late and I'm gonna do the short version.
17"
Low offset Fitment
8 and 9 +35 will work 225/45 255/40
Standard Fitment
8.5 and 9.5 +40 235/45 and 265/40
Common Symmetrical
8.5 F/R +40 245/40
Sleeper Fitment - MAnny Lozano
9.0 F/R +45 255/40/17,
Max Symmetrical
9.5 F/R +50 265/40/17
18"
Follow rules above while subtracting 5 from the aspect ratio/profile
However, there are some proprietary fitments for this diameter.
Johnny Fitment
18,9 and 10 +50 255/35/18 and 285/30/18
SSR Competition Fitment - Mike was first I saw with this, running V700
18,9.5 +50 front and rear, 265/35 or 285/30 all around.
Cooper Fitment
18,10 F/R +50-+52 285/30/18
Now these fitments have another variable to consider and that's tire selection. Each model may have a different section width regardless of what their sidewall may read. Also rim protectors are a commonly left out variable to take into consideration to avoid rubbing.
Alright guys. To all a good night. Please do email or call if you have any questions. This info is the easy part. The hard part is spending as little time as possible to find the wheels which follow these guidelines and your functions. That's where we can help. Should you be interested in some wheels or questions about fitment vs. function please email. I'd be glad to help. We have an array of wheels available in these fitments. Most in the upper range, but that's where we like to keep it. Don't forget about the club discount. If you're not registered and just a reader please do register. It will entitle you to a lot of savings. If you don't own a rotary that's fine. We take care of people who show interest in our "raring commodities" and like learning about our cars. lol.

You should look for at least +43 offset at 9". Rule of thumb for a normal setup, the closer the +50, the better.
However, tires also play a big part in the equation as well as your supension setup. You can get away with a lot more using coilovers than just lowering springs (since you'll have height adjustability).

so... i'm back to ask what may very well be yet another stupid question but i'm having problems sifting through all the posts on this topic...
what about this setup...
front: 18x8 +45 with 235/40R18
rear: 18x9 +38 with 265/40R18
Tockico Illuminas with H&R springs
if i've been understanding what i've been reading (and i'm not at all sure i have) this "should" fit without rubbing or having to roll my fenders, correct?

BTW, the reason you have so much trouble sifting through posts is because people keep repeating the same questions.....there are threads that clearly explain what offsets work on an FD, Gfelber's recent post is the latest example (even though some of the fitments he lists as ok, I consider to be too aggressive).

You're right; some of those are a bit aggressive, particularly the 18x10 +38 and my 18x11s. However, I think it is important to show these as they represent the maximum one can squeeze under the stock fenders. Moreover, I'd rather have a 295 or 305 under the stock fenders than a marginally wider tire (315s or 335s) with tacky fender flares.
