Hoosier R3S04 vs. Kumho V710 for road racing (285/30/18)

I'm planning on buying a set of 285/30/18's most likely in February and previously planned on getting the RS304's; however I've heard crappy reviews on them as far as cording quickly and not lasting long at all. The R3S03's were supposedly a better tire.

I've also read that Kumho has now come out with a 285/30/18 size tire in the V710's..... but after calling around I can't find anyone with them in stock ... and most say they don't exist yet.

************************************************** **************

A few ?'s:

What are the +/-'s of either tire? I know the V710's are new and probably not much info out there.

I've heard the Kumho's have a more rounded outside edge on them meaning they would clear a little bit better up front from the fender lips.

I'm putting these on 18x10.5" CCW's on an FD with coilovers and rolled fender lips. They will strictly be used for road racing and bolted on at the track. I want the luxury of being able to rotate them from front to back.

These are going on an FD with coilovers, big brakes, rolled fender lips, TriPoint modular front bar, delrin bushings, and approx 425rwhp/400rwtq (LS1).

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

-Mark

See this thread: New Kumho V710 sizes

The 285/30/18 will not be available until April 2005. I'm waiting on the 245/45/16 myself

Everyone has their own opinions on tires and here's what I can tell you I have seen at autox events. I haven't run them myself since my size is not available.

Most drivers I have talked to preferred the S03 over the S04. It is highly likely though (and is my opinion) that this was do to the fact that they already knew how to drive an S03 and the S04 must be driven a little differently or you can eat it up in a hurry. Definitely not a "beginner" tire as they will wear out very quickly if abused. Ultimate grip of the S04 is just as good but feedback is a little less and therefore makes it easier to overdrive the tire.

From what I have seen the V710 is just an awesome tire. It's built much more like a Hoosier so it is much lighter than the V700. The V710 is faster than the S03 on all the Z06's I have seen and gets much better wear as well. When hot they are practically a high strength adhesive. I know because I was running at the tail end of SS at an NT and everytime I came through the shutdown area my V700's would pick up about 10 cars worth of V710 rubber. Feeling the tires on these cars just after the course showed them to be almost like sticky gumballs. Every single person I know who has run the V710 has loved it.

Thanks Damon! I will hold my breath until the new year when they are hopefully released.

Just snapped up some used 18x10.5" CCW's for track use. Must get car on the road ASAP.

Mark, I'm hurt, I'm only a call away Damon is right 710, then '03, most guys really do not care for the '04 tires. The guys that like them are top drivers who are not paying for them . Carl
