Dunlop sp8000 Vs. Kumho ecsta
both Z rated tires, Both 225/50/16
longer lasting doesnt really matter to me... im just looking to see which performs better. And please do not suggest other tires, because i have narrowed it down to these two which are both in MY price range. thanx!

Denny, come on now bro. You know the 8000 will kill the 712 in performance. There's no comparison. Look at the treadwear rating differences.
Bang for buck in terms of street handling:
Yok AVS Intermediate
Dunlop SP8000's.
These are the O.G. sticky tires of yesteryear. I should know cause they are what I started out on. Frikin' loved the 8000s and were rated amongst the highest of their time. Intermediates were for autox, but required time to heat up. Therefore better for roadrace, as Manny has shown with his personal experiences.

If you want first hand knowledge of my Kumho hating, search my posts. Arrgh! I still get red!
Get the Dunlops. I had a set of SP5000 and thought they were great, 8000 should be better performance wise.

I've had SP 8000 and I currently have Kumoh ecsta. The Sp8000 were amoung my favorite tires. There great handling, very crisp and sharp feeling. They still make those ?!?!?! As for the Kumohs, well bang for the buck, only $102 for a 245/40/17. I like them, they last a while and there performance is good for the $$ you pay.

yea i have the SP8000s on my car right now, and im pretty satisfied with them. the reason i asked is because the guy at the tire shop said that i wouldve liked the kumhos better etc etc...
anyway, i guess im going with the sp8ks. either way, both tires are only about $85 each.
thanx for the input guys!

Yeah, but I'm sure lifespan is a concern for Denny. Definitely the AVS Intermediate or the SP8000.
Amongst my favorite bang for buck tires now. They weren't so cheap when I got 'em years and years ago.
235/45/17 mounted and balanced was right around $1000.00. I love the low profile industry now. So much cheaper.

I had the SP8000's on the car when I first got it. They were almost new (probably 5K miles on them - street driven). By the time the tread had worn down about half way, the performance on them crashed. The tires just did not grip at all ... I spun the wheels constantly and I felt like I was always washing out through corners. And my car was, and pretty much still is, bone stock. If that is the absolute that you can spend, I'd give you the vote of confidence on the SP8000's. But, if you can scrounge up like $50-100 more, there are better tires, IMO.

What does "not abused" mean?
4,000 miles?  You sure you reading the mileage right?
I've driven on a number of Dunlop SP8000 Sport tires, and it'll do 10,000 miles easy "not abused".  The 200AA tire tread rating implies it's a slightly harder compound that most of the other high-performance tires out there.  For some reason, I have a hard time believing you only got 4,000 miles out of at set of Dunlop SP8000 Sport U.S.-spec tires and claiming you have "not abused" them...
I can't believe you people are trying to compare a once top-of-the-line Dunlop model versus a cheap economical performance tire.  The SP8000's win hands-down.  The 712's are a marketing gimmick with it's fancy tread pattern to make it look aggressive.  My experience with the Kumho Ecsta 712 Supra...we managed to drift an FC into a curb, because of it's "high performance".  We've taken some SP8000's out to Laguna Seca for some NASA HPDE's, and it gave very neutral and controllable performance.  I've locked them up going into T6 and prior to shooting down the corkscrew, and they have never gotten out-of-hand even after the brief flat-spot prior to the turn itself.
The SP8000's used to cost closer to $200/each when they were first released.  Due to their non-production status, the prices havae plummetted to newer design tires for Dunlop.

AVS I's in 255/40-17 are $103 from the Tire Rack. They worked ok at Mid Ohio. Compared with brand new Hoosiers, the AVS I's were 5 to 6 seconds slower than the R3S03 Hoosiers. BUT the AVS I's worked well during the rain-soaked Day 1 of my Mid Ohio DE. I don't count on the AVS I's lasting much past the end of the year, so I'll be getting new tires every 13 months or so...If you just drive on the interestate the AVS I's should last longer. The SP8Ks are about the same performance level as AVS I's and about the same in tread wear especially if you participate in motorsports...

Not abused means :
No drag style launches. No hard launches with tires spinning... MY SET HAS NEVER SPUN! Im not sitting there spinning the tires! NO burnouts.. NOTHING!
Rotation is ever 1000 miles! For autox and I have another set of wheels and tires! So no track time on the SP;s!
And finally no "on the edge" driving.. I havent had any mountain runs or anything like that on this set!
It seems that the tires just wore through quickly!

FWIW I've never ever gotten more than 14,000 miles out of set of ultra high performance rubber! After 8 sets of tires over 6 years FD Rx7 ownership, I average 9,500 miles per set of tires. With this kind of average, it's no wonder I'm in love with the $103-each 255/40-17 Yokohama AVS I's

I might be selling my So-2 Pole position's!!! They are in great shape. Maybe 80-85% new. I have upgraded to 17 wheels so I am keeping the stock wheels but thinking of selling my tires. If you are interested I will send pics. One of them is actually only a few months old (road hazard warranty, had a nail and they replaced it). I paid around $1000 for tires mounted/ balanced out the door. I would around $500 and shipping for them. Sizes 225/50/16 Mike
