AP Racing brakes on FD

Hy guys,

last summer I sold an AP Racing brake kit (4 piston calipers and 330mm discs) to a friend of mine. The brake kit was not originally for a Mazda though AP uses a system with replacable caliper brackets to adjust to about any type of car.

Now he tells me he won't be using the kit so I'm interested in buying it bak since I got my FD (didn't had it back then when I sold the kit)

Any people having it on? any type specs? ordering coeds or anything like that.

Any support would be welcome.

ask Jim he is full of wonderfull info and he had an AP set.. but I think his was Six Pots but either way AP in my opinion have the best break callipers around..

You will need to get a diffrent top hats to fit the fd if its not fd specific..

Once again get ahold of Jimlab on this forum he can help you out.

The AP brake set is HIGHLY recommended by RE Amemiya's race car driver's. I talked to one in person and he has a set on his stock car...that's how much he recommends them.

This needs to be moved to the Suspension forum.

Thx

I checked the RX7store specs on the Ap brake kit they sell and the calipers match with the ones had last year (CP5200) I also found the specs to have the caliper braces fixed. it will need some Aluminium machining but I know this guy who makes stuff in 7175 airplane aluminium for a few bucks.

The discs will have to be new and the adapters for that will also have to be custom machined. If anybody has some technical info/designs on that, please mail it to me.

My car is 100% stock, so from racing point of view the brakes are seriously over the line compared to the rest, but why walk out of such a good deal and gain some in the safety area when new kits cost about 2500$??

I' ll have to wait for the time I will have the wheels for it because I don't think the standard 16" wheels will fit the 330mm discs ;-)

I'd get bigger rims/tires all around now. Now that your brakes are bigger, you'll need bigger/stickier tires to grip the road.

yeah sure I will, but I just bought the car and are low on finances for now. I guess I won't be able to go any smaller than 18" with the brakes on. And i will get the rims I want first time out and no solution in between.

I'll have to get the braces fixed also so that will also take some time.

In the meantime I"ll take the time to get to knowthe car and do some renewals on the vacuum hoses.

If anybody has a good suggestion on that issue. Is there a company who sells it as a complete kit?

The bigger brakes do not have any increased safety for street driving. If you never plan to track the car I would resell the brakes at a profit (if you can get them from your friend cheaply enough) and spend the money on something the car actually needs.

You can fit 17" wheels with 330mm discs.

You can always get the new Stop Tech kit later for $1795. Not cheap but very nice.

I saw that RX7store sold the compelte AP kit for about 2450$.

The custom machining will cost me about 100$ max on working hours. A friend works at an airplane construction factory and brings pieces of high worthy aluminium which we can use.

Ok the discs will have to be new and also the pads. just imaguine that I wrote to the importer of Ap for Belgium and he quoted me about 280$ a piece for the custom braces and about 250$ a piece for the disc adaptors. yeah right...He just wants to sell me a new kit...

Hmmm.. nice to know that 17" will still fit. a friend still has some 3 pieced Momo wheels (originally for the turbo II) which he can't get rid of. Would be nice to run with slicks or track tires...just changing the wheel rims will have to be done as they all are 7.5x17. But that's not that bigga deal.

thx for the reaction by the way

Well, they LOOK badass, but that's a lot of unnecessary weight.....

Well it many be a little unnecessary weight, but we dont get sprint days that often, so building up a brake setup for 1 hour plus sessions on track.

330mm ~= 13". I think the RS/RZ rotors are 314mm ~= 12.36" all around. But I agree that the RS/RZ setup is nice and is hands-down the best value for beefier brakes. You do get a lot more pad choices with better pad value (price and/or longevity) with the AP calipers, though.
