45 profile tyres?
hi all
i bought my FD after years of wanting one
around 10 years ago i was in australia and was watching at the bathurst production car races when the RX-7s caned the porsche 968 club sports
the next year they did it again at eastern creek raceway, even thoughporsche had upped the ane with the 993 carrera
i was very happy to see my FD came with 235/40-17, 255/40-17 tyres, very close to the 235/45-17, 255/40-17 used on the RX-7 SP
i noticed recently while watching a japanese video on the RZ spec cars that they also used 235/45 front tyres
what's with the 45 profile, it seems an odd size but i pressume they found it controlled the front end better?
is it worth looking for some when it comes time to change tyres?

sorry to answer my own question but in case anyone finds this in a search i found the answer in another thread
235/45x17 profile tyres have a higher load rating than 235/40x17 tyres
when the car is cornered very hard the massive weight transfer is theoretically too much for the lower profile 40 tyres and could cause them to fail, the maker obviously can't afford to recommend anything less than 100% perfectly suited tyres for the car so fitted 235/45 with its higher load ratings to the performance rx-7 versions like the RZ

live and learn and pass it on
