245 45 16 Tire Choices Limited???

Looking for some new shoes for my 7. I daily drive my car, so changing tires every 5k miles doesn't appeal to me. Price is no concern, traction and handling would be nice, and of course treadwear. Looking at all the web sites, it seems there is a very limited number of choices for this size tire.

If you had to rank them, what would it be?

Bridgestone Potenza RE750
Continental ContiSportContact
Fuzion ZRi
Sumitomo HTR Z
Yokohama AVS ES100
Hankook Ventus Rs2 Z212
Toyo Proxes T1r
Falken FK-451

This is about all I could find. Anyone with personal experience with these, please let me know if you'd buy them again, and pros and cons.

I have the RE750s. They're good street tires, but after owning them for a while, I feel they're not sticky enough. When I drive really agressive, you can really feel the tires limiting you. They don't stick to the road as well as I thought they would. I should have went with the ES100's and dealt with the road noise. RE750s have great treadlife if that helps any. If you want just a street tire to cruise on they'll do.

i have toyo t1r's right now
225/45 front 245/40 rear

fine for street
good in the dry and very good in the rain
even worn down theres minimal hydroplaning in regular driving
brand new they are on the pricey side. but if price is no concern...

fk451 is supposed to be very quiet
good street wet and dry traction as well
the treadwear is its weakness, supposedly
you can get them cheap because they are discontinued. replaced by the fk452

Thanks for the replies guys. I added that price is no concern part, just because I wanted to judge them all on quality and not price.

I live in Phoenix, so it never rains here, never, and when it does, it evaps before hitting the ground. That's what we call the monsoon season! What fun.

Anyway, so wet traction really doesn't figure in to the equation here.

Thanks again for the reviews.

I have used these and how they ranked:

Hankook Ventus Rs2 Z212 (good grip when heated up)
Sumitomo HTR Z (good grip, squeals at limit but still grip, using it now)
Yokohama AVS ES100 (not so grippy, then grippy, then noisy and not grippy)
...
...
...
...
...
Fuzion ZRi (this tire suck)

i have the hankooks and like them. They need to be heated up a little but grip very nicely and are all around good. Plus their cheap.

Toyo RA1's wear like stones..... (meaning they last a long time for an R-compound tire). You can get 10K miles out of them if you don't do burnouts all over the place. They handle great, totally streetable, and with as hot as AZ gets.... they will stick like glue on the road.

Falken is also a good choice also. ES100's aren't worth the money.

Out of the bunch you listed, these would be the only ones I would consider:

Continental ContiSportContact
Hankook Ventus Rs2 Z212
Toyo Proxes T1r

I would probably go with the T1R out of those, but either of the other two would be fine as well.

I like Mahjik's choices and I would add Kumho MX. I like them a lot.

The Hankooks are probably the best tire. I have them, and they gripped pretty well yesterday at the autox after a couple runs.

Ok, still searching for tires.
Thanks to all the input.

Now, I've four more choices to the list:

Toyo RA1's
Dunlop SP Sport 8000
BFG's KDW
Bridgestone Potenza S03

What do you guys think?

If this statement is still true:

Then I would still go from the list I suggested above.

Thanks Mahjik!!!

When I called Discount and told them I wanted the Hankooks over the others, the guy told me the Hankooks are only 1-star rated and the other name brand one's are 3-star rated and they have more belts in the tires and are better quality. Are they just trying to get me to buy a more expensive tire? I hate sales people!

The guy is full of crap. If you look online for review of that tire, you'll see a lot of happy people. Just order through their website so you don't have to deal with the crappy sales people.

Get the hankooks.

I have htr z currently, and I feel quite a bit of wall flex from them.

Hankooks are my next set of tires to buy.

Yeah, that guy's a moron. The Hankooks are by far the fastest tire on your list. They are probably the only ones that are comparable to the Falken Azenis RT-615s. I've done a couple events on the tires now, and I'm pretty happy with the grip that they provide. I lost the rear end one time, but I'm sure it wouldn't have happened if I was a better driver.

Just for a little comparison, my friend drives a 350z on coilovers with lots of aftermarket goodies. He has over 4x the amount of events under his belt, but I managed to outperform him by 1.5 seconds. He runs the falken azenis. Now, this may be due to my car's much lighter weight, but my point is that the RS-2s are a pretty good tire. Get the hankooks, you will not be sorry.

Hankooks or the Kumho MXs get my vote, reasonably priced and give all around good performance. STAY AWAY from the ES100s, those things chunk like hell once you start doing any kind of performance driving, or at least in my experience. If you are looking for a good Dot R tire on the other hand, you can't go wrong with the Falken RT615s.

Also, if you are in Phoenix, I work at Discount, and yeah that guy was just trying to sell you, but besides that if you stop by I could probably get you a decent deal

Hi guys. Thanks for the info.

TougeRoads96 - thanks for the offer. I'll keep you in mind in the future!

I just bought a set of Enkie RPF1's from Rishie. 17x9 255/40/17 all around with Falken FK452's on them. Rishie recommended them and he only deals with Falken's and Toyo's and I didn't want TR1's, so he recommended these instead.

I hope I like them!!!

Well, might as well use them if they're already on the wheel I guess, but keep this thread in mind when you look for new tires. However, with 17" wheels, you won't be as limited in the tires that you can use. In your case, I'd go with the Falken Azenis RT-615.
