wichita falls/sheppard AFB????
hey guys, im just looking at what the area will be like while im at sheppard AFB for a school. gonna be there for 41 weeks. . . looking at a late march move date. i dont know when exactly, as i still need to get the school in order. . . but i will be out there at some point this quarter, hopefully.
is there anything going on in the wichita falls/sheppard AFB area? i have a ton of family out there, including my grandparents in the DFW area.
really, i cant wait to get out there and do something different.
looking forward to meeting some of you guys.

Hey Paul. Its been a long time since I have lived there. I think there is still an old drag strip that is off of hywy 287 going towards Iowa park (west of sheppard). I think there is also a small paved oval next to the drag strip. My dad used to race on that strip many moons ago and it was the first track I went to as a kid. Eddie Hill (former nhra tf racer) used to race there back in the 60's and still lives in the WF area. Thats about all I can remember. As for dfw, if you can think of it you can probably find it-do it here.

at the moment, i dont know if my family is coming with me. if they dont, ill probably have TONS of time to get some much needed things done to my car. . . i couldnt imagine having time to work on my car again.
anyways, my transfer just came through over the weekend. i should have a school date very soon. shooting for mid to late march.

Wichita Falls is approximately in the middle of no where
It's a nice small town and there's a small university there. It's far away from any major cities though. If you like the small town and country life you'll enjoy the area.

i definately dont mind the small town feel. . . thats where i live right now.
im probably gonna use this time to do a lot of weekend traveling. with family in dallas and houston. . . and elsewhere. . . i had better get out there to see them, cause they might stone me if i come all that way WITHOUT "sayin' hi!!!"
looking forward to all of this!!!

As Slammedblk7 said DFW is about 2.5 hours away. Houston is approx another 4 hours from DFW, keeping in mind that both DFW and Houston are very big so your trip could be longer or shorter depending on exactly where you're going

Could be A LOT worse trust me... I was stationed at Altus AFB for a little bit... we used to make a 1.5hr drive to Wichita Falls in order to have 'fun'.
Dunno how it's grown, I just remember going to the mall there and also some club right down the road, it was okay I guess.

my dad grew up in altus, and we used to visit every summer. my grandparents had a farm JUST ABOUT bordering the flight line. planes used to fly overhead all the time. . . believe me. . . i KNOW how much fun you had in altus!!!
on the otherhand, that city is one of the places ill have to visit while im out there. i havent been to altus in about 10-15 years. . .

I basically grew up in Wichita Falls. My dad tought basic electronics at Sheppard for 9 1/2 years before we moved to Biloxi (thankfully only six months), thence to Omaha for 2.5 years before dropping in Japan (Yokota AB) where I graduated H.S. I drove through my old neighborhood when on my way to Amarillo to visit some in-laws. In 20 years I still knew exactly where everything was in the southern parts of W(t)F. Ah, Wichita Falls, the place that progress forgot. Still, being a kid growing up I still have some Wonder Years moments I'm fond of from that place. That's it. Done. Move on....
