Possibly moving to Dallas

What kind of RX7 community experience can I dial into when I get there? I know from SevenStock there's a fairly active RX7 community somewhere in Texas.

Also, working either downtown or just south of down town, where is a secure area that I should look for a place to rent/live short term?

The DFW group meets the first Saturday of every month. As far as where to live around Downtown Dallas, not sure. It's been awhile since I lived on that side of the metroplex but I think the Uptown is supposed to be the happening place

Where do they meet?

Also, not so much looking to live in the happening place as much as a place where I have a better than most chance my car there in the morning.

Irving just east of DFW airport is where we meet.

As far as where to live, I'll tell you what I tell every client who asks the same thing... it depends. While there are pockets of neighborhoods you'll want to steer clear of, you can find a relatively "safe" place to live anywhere in the Metroplex.

These two sites should help you decide...

I live in Denton. I havn't had a chance to come to a meet yet. That said my house rear parking in the back - not an alley. Its not much at all and I am in the mist of remodeling the kitchen. But I am cheap and the car would be safe. I have a 3 bedroom house. Pm me if you want to discuss.

^ When I first moved to Texas I lived in Denton and made the 46 mile, one way, trip to Southeast Dallas (which is one of the neighborhood pockets you want to avoid) Mon-Fri. My boyfriend at the time had to give me a laundry list of reasons why I shouldn't murder him every evening after getting home. That drive SUCKS. Don't do that to the boy!!

Cool

If you are looking for a morning meet, try Cars & Coffee at Classic BMW parking lot in Plano, the last Saturday of every month.
It is a big meet and they do have free coffee for a donation.
You will see from Veryon, Lambos, Ferraris, Porsche, Alpha, BMW, Lotus, Muscle cars, Old Classics, Panteras and yes, 1 or 2 RX7's. LOL

Get an apartment in the Greenville or Uptown area, you won't regret it.

Avoid any property that has "Oak Cliff" as an address.

If you don't "have" to live in Dallas, the city of Allen is a nice town to live in. Very safe, too.

I'm gonna have to take personal offense at that comment. I've lived in Oak Cliff for 16 years, I am just southwest of downtown. In fact I've walked across the viaducts to downtown from my house. I like it here a lot more and I feel a lot safer than the suburban hell of Arlington where I used to live.

Yes there are bad parts in Oak Cliff, just like there are bad parts in Allen or Pleasant Grove or Plano or any of the other cities listed in this thread. Generalities like your post don't serve anyone well.

To the OP, if you plan to live in the Dallas area for a long time you are best off renting a place for six months and using that time to familiarize yourself with the different parts of the area. If you are worried about the security of your car, you should place a high priority on a place with a garage no matter what part of town you live in. Even if you're only here for a few months you should still insist on a place with a garage for your car.

I really don't want to leave So Cal. Kids are grown, so not an issue there other than they live near me currently. But got a job offer that is really difficult to not accept. Especially given the way of the world these days.

I do the local Cars n Coffee every Saturday I can. My S5 TurboVert has been deamed worthy. So looking for that and the local RX7 gatherings to network to a circle of new friends.

I appreciate the advise and look for more. So keep it coming. I did a little searching and found that an old friend of mine apparently lives in Carrollton. So that's now added to consideration unless someone talkes me out of it.

We've never had an ice cream vendor shot in cold blood on a street in Arlington.

State of denial is a sad thing...all the places along Chalk Hill are areas you need a CHL to make sure you're gonna be OK...don't break down in those areas.

I'd say you're just in a good part of Oak Cliff. Last year, you couldn't go two weeks w/o a shooting, somebody dead or a family murdered. Real bad year....and how about that WalMart concert two years ago where they were just DYING to see the Mariachi's....?

Garland and Rowlett aren't too shabby. I live in Rowlett near I-30 and downtown Dallas is just a 20min drive.

Garland = King of the Hill
Get a GPS and a hard copy of the latest Mapquest of Texas and you still will get lost in Garland.

I live in McKinney and love it. But that would be a bit of a drive if you're working in Dallas.

Not that this is what you're looking for but there are about 10+ v8 swapped cars in the Dallas area... Hell, I bought my car just outside Dallas from an owner who had started assembling parts for the ls1 swap.

The Texans I know just don't believe in cars having souls.

That might be because you don't have ice cream vendors on the streets in Arlington...

Whatever, I'm not trying to trash your city. I'm just saying I've lived in both and I prefer Oak Cliff to Arlington.

OP also said his job is near downtown Dallas. The commute from Arlington would suck. That's not a dig at Arlington, it's just a fact of commuting in DFW.

Starting in March they are moving to the FIRST Saturday of the month. That means they will be having a C&C meet on the next two Saturdays - 2/27 and again on 3/6.

Cool

I like to see the cars, what I don't like is some of the people/owners attending.
They think they are somebody, because the car they drive.
Reason for me not to go and boost their egos.
