paging Phil in Houston RE: Datsun Roadster
Phil,
I don't have your PM, but you were asking about my 1969 Datsun 2000 last time we were together. I've decided to sell it, so here's your chance (if you're even interested!):

It's design for the times was too old fashioned and copied the British cars.
The 1300-2000cc Alfas and BMWs at the same time where very advanced and all around better cars, but then they were not convertables.

Did you know that the Datsun 2000 was so successful in racing that it was moved out of its original class and put in with the Porsche 911? It had a 4 cylinder 2 liter engine that produced 150 horsepower with the dealer optioned Solex carbs. That is 60hp more than the MGB, more than the Alfa Spyder, more than the Fiat Spyder, more than the modern Miata which weighs 400 lbs more. It has more power than my old Sentra SE-R all aluminum 2L DOHC SR20DE engine which has the advantage of CAD, modern electronics and fuel injection.
As far as BMW and Alfas being more advanced, well, maybe so. The Ferrari Daytona was more advanced than the Mazda Cosmo, but the Cosmo is still desireable.
I find it odd that you can't appreciate this car, which is a major part of Japanese sports car history. The Honda 600s and 800s were unsuccessful in the USA. The Toyota 2000GT was awesome by anyone's standards, but they only made a handful and the common car enthusiast would never be able to afford one anyway. If it weren't for the success of the Datsun Roadster, the 240Z would not have been made. The 240Z changed the way America looked at Japanese cars. Do you remember the 60s? Japanese cars were regarded poorly, worse than Kia is today. If it weren't for the success of the 240Z, we might not have the Japanese sports cars we do today, including your RX-7. So show some respect for the Datsun Roadster.

What I stated is still true, and having a bigger engine or more power does not make a car better for it's time. Leaf springs and drum brakes in the rear, so outdated even in the 60s.
What I said has nothing to due with my respect for it.

Chuck, it sure came across like you were trashing the car. You started off by saying "nice car," added "but..." and then you made two negative comments. The funny thing was that the first one was false and the second one was irrelevant. In fact, I don't even know where to begin to point out the nonsense in the second statement. But hmmm, I think I'll try:
It's an apples to oranges comparison (Datsun Roadster vs. Alfa and BMW 4-seater coupes). A better comparison would be the Alfa vs. the Datsun 510. Hmm, didn't the 510 win the championship? Oh wait, the Alfa took the flag at the championship race...only to be disqualified for cheating (it had a hidden fuel tank). That advanced technology really helped them there!
OK, so how relevent is the technology issue? We are talking about cars over 40 years ago. How about another example: The Ferrari GTO with its quad-cam V12 was a much more advanced car than its rival, the Shelby AC Cobra. The Cobra had outdated 50's technology and a bigger engine. But it dominated the Ferrari GTO and has become, of course, one of the most desireable cars on the planet. It has more replicas than any car ever.
So why make those comments, Chuck? I want to know because it appears to me that you were just bashing.

The DATSUN 510 won against the ALFAS and BMWs because they had direct factory support of NISSAN's mega bucks as they moved bigtime into the US market. The ALFAs and BMWs did not have factory support like NISSAN gave.
Anyone with the money can take an inferior car and make it win. Just like the EVO guys for less money can blow your Porsche off the road. But which would you want? I would take your Porsche over the EVO just as the Alfa or BMW over the roadster.
My first car was a 1957 TR3 punched out to 2.2 liter with more power than my 1967 Alfa. But the Alfa was a better all around car, and was only slower in a drag race.

If Shelby had to compete on even displacement, the Cobra never would even existed.
Yes the Cobra is copied a lot, it's CHEAPER to do it. Try making a Ferrari copy and it would cost more. And then we have all the old US men trying to live their boyhood fantacies in their 50+ years. That is why!

Chris,
I have always likes the Datsun 2000 roadster, and I am one of the few who knew what it was when seen on the street. For it's time, it was better than most of it's competition. But the 1969's technical design was still outdated by the newer Europeans. That is all that I said. I have been a continuous sport car fanatic since the early 60s, and bought my first sports car in 1964, a 57 TR3.
In fact the Mazda FB RX-7 also was outdated by those 20 year olds. I owned a 83 RX-7 for 10 years. I enjoyed it even with it's faults like poor suspension and drum rear brakes. It only had more power, so I modified it to make it better, and more powerful. My 68 Alfa was still a better all around fun car than my 83 even with less power as it had only 1290cc while the 12A had an equivalent 2292cc.
But you responded emotionally instead of being rationally. I do not get emotionally upset when owners of other makes talk down of the FD and it's reliability problems, and not being able to produce high safe power like the Hondas, EVOs, etc. This are true facts! I have owner my FD since 1992.

Was I talking to you???
No, but if I was, I would have said:
"... never mind the RACIST TROLL".
Go back under the rock you came from little giant.

OK, this is getting out of hand. No need to get ugly.
Chuck,
Yes I responded emotionally. I do have an emotional connection to cars, especially my cars. Most of us car guys (and gals) do. All cars have inherint flaws, just like people. Some were designed with the flaws, some flaws developed after time (rust, for example).
So do you go up to someone at a car meet and say "Nice car, but x car is better for reasons y&z?" It's pointless and rude. There are many appropriate ways to talk to an owner about what you think. Having owned five Datsun Roadsters, I can enthusiastically tell you more about its many flaws.
It boils down to the way it was posted I guess. Kind of like saying "your kid is ugly" vs. "I have seen someone else that looks like your child...they were ugly." ...kidding! I like you Chuck, we've talked a lot at various car meets (not just RX-7 meets). I'm looking forward to seeing you again and talking cars in person.
