Newbie In Texas

Hi - I'm new to the forums and the FD world, so I'll just introduce myself quickly.

Just bought an RX FD after wanting one for 13 years, and now i don't know what to do with it!

When I bought the car I was told is wasn't turbo, so I got it in automatic (wouldn't be racing, so no point, right?). Turns out the car IS turboed, and the engine has been treated FABULOUSLY well by it's previous owners. I'm not looking to do a tranny swap anytime soon, so I'm currently focused on purchasing longevity mods for my car.

The problem is that every shop I take this damn car too doesn't know what the hell they're doing. Gullo told me the car had less than 100 miles left in it, Milstead Automotive is retarded (there are pieces of the car missing and the guages don't work, neither of which they noticed after having the car for THREE DAYS), and the other store where I live doesn't have anyone that knows how to work on rotaries!

I used to own a 1989 GXL FC, and I don't think I'll ever buy anything that isn't an FC or FD ever again.

So...who on these forums is from Texas?

Check out the sticky topics in the 3rd gen section. Lots of answers to your questions there.

As for auto shops I'm trying to do my own work. I'm sure someone in the Houston area will chime in on a good shop for you to go to.

Welcome and have fun with the car.

If you just want it back to factory specs call Bryan over at Maz Max. He is the service manager, a member of the houston RX club, and a 2nd and 3rd gen owner. They have Mazda master mechanics over there and they do a great job. They are not cheap but you get what you pay for with them. No surprises. (They are brutally honest with you sometimes and very matter of fact.) They don't do a lot of "aftermarket" work is their only drawback if there is one. They pretty much stick with stock parts and pieces.

Im from texas, and the dallas area has some good rotary mechanics...depends on how far you want to travel. Check out MarvelSpeed in Rowlett, and of course, Rotary Performance in Garland.

I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one in the Houston area that's new to the FD3 (or the forum for that matter). Everything I've read on this forum has convinced me that I need to take my car to Dallas to get it worked on, but I'm looking to upgrade performance.

Yeah Dallas is probably the place to go, I've had a pretty good experience with Gotham Racing there. Steve and Alex are great guys and do good work but they seem to have a lot going on at times so things seem to take a little long to complete. I've heard only good things about MarvelSpeed.

In Austin there's MZM Performance, they do some if the best work around(both engine building and tuning) but you'll pay for it thats for sure.

That said for Dallas I'd recommend MarvelSpeed for building/upgrades and Gotham(Steve) for all your tuning.

Thanks for the recommendations. This is a great service - I wouldn't have known where to look without this forum.

If you need the performance work done.. sure haul it up to Dallas... if your just looking to return the car to it's factory specs call MazMax they are the local dealer alternative. When dealers in Houston can't fix em they send them to Bryan and his staff.

Bryan is a member of the local RX-Club (www.houstonrx7club.com) and ownss both a FD and FC of his own. They are the best bet locally to get things back under control and on the road. www.mazmax.com or 713-896-8005

Does MazMax only provide factory parts? From what I hear, a lot of the FD stock parts are garbage. I realize I may lose a few horsepower here and there if I go aftermarket, but if it means my car will live longer, I'm all for it!

Certain items should be considered "upgradeable" namely the intercooler and the radiator. It really depends on your plans. Give Bryan a call and see if he can help you out with your direction and needs.

Yeah. They 'ed me pretty good about a week ago. I went there for 6 years and thought I had developed a relationship with the owner, Mark. Then I buy the RX per his recomendation only to find out that they just 'happened' to somehow miss about $6000 worth of repairs that needed to be done.

...so yeah... Milstead.

PM twokrx7 (Kyle) here on the forum. He is a long standing member for the local RX-7 club, an FD owner, and modifier. He has done work for several people locally, including myself. Most recently helped out DMoneyRx-7 getting his car sorted out. He can work on cars from stock to single turbo.

Do you remember the name of the article? I know I've seen one on an RX-7 project that was in Sport Compact Car, and another entitled Black Lightning, but I don't recall if that was in the same magazine or not.

This was several years ago... it was a two car feature with a Red and a Silver RX-7.
