New Orleans people????

Going to New Orleans for New Years....need recomendations on which hotel to stay at. Don't worry about price, that is not a huge concern. I am just looking for the best hotel I can get that people recomend and had a good experience with.

I am debating a traditional New Orleans Hotel like Place d'Armes or I am looking at a more regal hotel like The Wyndham or La Pavilion.

Need to book ASAP, so if you or your family frequent New Orleans and have a recomendation, feel free to share.

Thanks,
-Scott

Also, if please add any comments regarding safety, nightlife, traffic, construction, etc...

Stay (walking) on Bourban / Royal and Canal at night. Ramada is nice on Canal street two blocks from Bourban. Mr B's is right there.Their BBQ shrimp is as close to sex or heaven as food gets and I live here! (#1 recomendation for a dinner)Never , never get in a fight. NEVER speak to an officer especially when a drunk friend is wrongly being arrested ( dont ask).
Cities send their police here to learn how to police crowds so there is a reason.
O tolerance. You can get drunk(blasted to where you become homeless) and eat the best foods , dance all night and have so much fun but dont get stupid!(oxymoron)
Jax Brewery for the count down ball.(On the river in the quarter)
Royal Sonesta Hotel is on Bourban also.Walk to the French Market by Jackson Square and get beniet's (doughnuts for breakfast tradition) at Cafe Dumonde' and watch the artisans/musicians
There is a small old hotel that is nice and a little cheaper. It was a wharehouse. Its cool. I forget now.If you need you can PM me.

monte leon hotel right off of bourbon. I live 10 min outside new orleans and sometimes I still book a weekend in that hotel ever once and a whle to have my own getaway deal. Has one of the best bars in New Orleans downstairs. Caracell bar is fun.

I ended up going with the Wyndham Hotel since they claim to have the best parking and I read that it was the number one rated hotel for first timers to New Orleans. It is only 2-3 blocks from the French Quarter, and has nice views of the Mississippi. Hopefully my next trip down to New Orleans won't be with a truck and trailer and I can drive a normal vehicle and get a nice traditional New Orleans Brick wall hotel.
