RBII has started the last two "Meet" threads and no sign of the red FD? It's the one with the vented hood like BlowenByTwins', right?
Anyhoooos...the 1stgens that showed up each had a wee bit of a problem that night...titorx7 decided to run E85 in his '83 and was still chasing a stumble from idle in his '83 GSL...
Me? I've got some mystery circuit that is deciding to close the shutter valve when the engine gets warmed up. It's only supposed to be intermittent at highway speeds to save gas, as Mazda puts it, but it's closing all the time now. Here's what everyone saw when I came stumbling into the parking lot...well, after they got over the E-fan that sounded like it was getting ready to fall apart on the radiator. Still trying to get Derale to supply a single phase motor for the 17" fan housing.
Here's my quickie parking lot shots....
...and then the BlowenByTwins' latest entry into the large-is-not-large enough turbo wars, the source of the ear bleeds...
An obligatory red FD shot...
Thanks for asking. Yep...did the exact same thing but took longer to happen this time. Started up fine, no smoke, held a steady 900 rpm idle as I left the parking lot. Because of the crisp, dry air, it was a lot of fun as I made my way to Hwy 161. I got to the lighted intersection, proceeded on the frontage road and there were no problems. I got onto Hwy 161 itself, got her up to 75 mph and again, no problems whatsoever. She was already warmed up just from the frontage road but I kept my eye on the temps to see what was going to happen if it cut out again...nothing alarming at all happened there. Not even when the power suddenly cut in half while I was on Hwy 161. She could maintain the speed but I was deeper into the throttle to keep her there. I got home but I had to play the throttle at every stop light until I got home, which is South Arlington right on the Mansfield border. When I popped the hood, it was the same glowing red-hot exhaust manifold as the picture above that greeted me.
I think I'm going to pop the Nikki off the intake manifold and just get rid of the butterflies on the shutter valve.

I think that you can just unplug the solenoid that runs vacuum to the valve, and it'll stay open. Which one that is I can't say, as my '79 never had one, but I'd bet that's floating about the net.

It's the honking goose and it's been done. The valve is being drawn shut for whatever reason. I'm going to crank it up this weekend and just sit and wait for it to warm up and do it while I have a meter on the solenoid that supplies vacuum to the dashpot for the shutter arm. I'm also going to just watch that shutter arm to see if it moves like I think it's moving.
Kinda like watching toast to see it toast.
And apologies for once again not doing the door prize thing. I hate working Saturday's because it makes doing the rotary meet almost impossible and I was late again mainly due to that.
Luckily, I just got off that shift for the next 6 weeks, so we'll do the door prize thing all proper for the November meet...and we might want to get an earlier start if the temps have dropped by then...
