I get one retest, then I have to pay again, at Kwik-Kar. Some shops do offer unlimited, or at least a lot of tests for free. I learned of one in Hurst I should have taken it to for just that.
Any way, I've still got a free retest from the second paid test. I should have runthrough all the diagnostic procedures in the FSM before I pulled the trigger on the new cat-con. The blue solenoid (relief, IIRC) was unplugged on one terminal. TPS was out of whack, too, though I don't know how much that affects emissions. The cat now has the requisite 100 miles or so on it, but I didn't get a chance to take it in this weekend. There's really no reason it shouldn't pass - it's stock except for the header and cone filter, and everything appears to be working properly. It runs strong, with the exception of losing some top end due to the stuck aux. ports.
Also, I kept the old cat, mainly because the muffler-monkey cut the @#!$ flange off of the header and welded the cat straight on. Lovely: a single-piece exhaust, just what I wanted.

Oh, a more "truthy" version of my signature pixel-art FC:
