Oh and for the record. I have test drove an rx8, it got to 100 pretty dang quick and the handling is awesome. I'm sure it would do 140 with no problem.

Wow. Who would compare the FD and the Rx-8 in anyway other than the are both Mazda's and have REs from the factory. Thats like trying to compare a new 3-series BMW with a 10 yearolder M3. Things in general have changed way too much to make any kind of direct comparison.

Lets see:

It hard to pick a year for the FD to start with. 93 had alot of issues and the sticker price was anywhere from 30-35k. The 94 had little to no issues, but the price was much closer to 40k. The cars made for the year of 95 I have heard very little of anything since they seem to be decently rare. Price though was geting over 45k for these off the showroom floor. If you look at inflation, the price of these cars today if they were just made would be closer to 60-65k, but without the realiblity of cars of that price.

In the early to mid nineties they where up there in the the pinicle of Japan's production cars. In all they are now saught after by punk kids looking for an "image", those who enjoy a wonderfully built chasis with a maintenance hungry engine, and collectors. Often, as with the other "higher level" cars, we tend to get an elitest attitude. We think nothing is better than our baby for the price. Thats decently true when it comes to buying a 10 yearold car today. Alot of us view the new RX-8 as either a family car that drives very well and a stepping stone to the return of a "pure" sports car. Or a poor replacement for our beloved FD; which Mazda even pointed out that it is not.

The RX-8. Another great chasis by mazda. This time they put a much more realiblie(correct me if I'm wrong) engine in that does decently well for the RE in the NA world. It seats four very well(hell, my HUGE father fits in the back seat) and is very comfortable for long drives. It has decent trunk space(I wish one of my cars did) and shines quite well when pushed to the "fun limits". Yes, it can't go as fast as the FD. But thats not why you got it right? If you wanted something current that can do that look over at the Corvette camp. Of course then you're looking at a number that gets closer to what you would pay for a FD today. The RX-8 was never designed to be the next generation FD. You bought a four seater that is really fun to drive.

The problem exist when you try to get the FD guys together. One- we know our cars tend to break so sometimes we do a number crunch to see if we can afford it this time if we want to take our cars out(doesn't apply to all of the FD guys). Two- we have been harrased by ricers, supras, corvettes, and just about anthing that has a piston engine(I know some of us ripped out the "heart" of car for a boinger but it runs better ;P). So when comes to making new friends we're skeptical. Some of us treat ya'll like we have been treated in the past. Others welcome their new brothers and sisters with open arms.

In conclution:
Stop trying to compare and really great family car to a 10 yearold sports car. It just won't factor out. We all drive Mazda's so we should get along. The RX-8 shows that the RE can make a comeback. The FD guys that want another Mazda sports car just might get that in the next 5 years.

For another arguement:
THERE WILL NEVER BE ANOTHER RX-7! RX-9 is next. HAHA!

Did ya'll miss me?

I agree with just about everything you wrote except for one thing, the Rx-8 is not a family car, it is first and foremost a sports car, but one that allows you to have the option of carrying more than 2 people. A lot of people say with 4 doors it can't be a sports car but I disagree, it was designed to try and have the best of both worlds, a sports coupe with sedan like seating. It was not designed to be a sedan with sports car characteristics as an afterthought. People are always going to try and compare it to other 2 door sports cars (FD, Supra, 350z, S2k etc.) and some have even gone so far as to compare it to EVo's, WRX's, etc. and that's fine, there's never going to be a new car that comes out that doesn't get compared to anything, but to me the car is in a class by itself. How many other rotary powered "4 door" cars are out there? The truth is (at least my perspective anyway) that the Rx-8 brought back the rotary, unfortunately it had to come after the FD and so everyone was all abuzz about it being the next 7 blah blah blah, well it was never intended to replace the 7, there is no replacement for the 7, period. It's kinda' silly when you think about it, honestly, will there ever be another 63 split window vette? or 59' caddy? nope, those cars are irreplaceable and so is the FD. While the 8 has had mixed reviews from the people who claim to be purists or whatever, if people were really excited about the rotary and the 7 they should be stoked about the 8. It brought back the rotary, made it affordable, significantly more reliable, and also opened up a whole new audience by bridging the 2 door/4 door gap. There's no need for the arguing over which is better, they're both exceptional cars, there's no need to say this one is faster or that one is slow or whatever, it's all stupid to me. They're both fast, both handle extremely well, the only difference is in styling and revisions to the powerplant pretty much why aruge over that? I hope Mazda keeps the rotary alive, and the 8 is a step in the right direction, I mean, how many "famliy cars" can smoke an S2k, 350z, and the like at Tusukuba? I don't even need to mention the reviews and praise the 8 has gotten worldwide, not to mention earning engine of the year when it first came out etc....that should be plenty for rotorheads to be stoked about FD or not (welcome back Klar)

I am a fan of the rx-8. Heck, Mazda sold waaaay more rx-8's in one year than all 3 years of the fd. It was good for Mazda which means it's good for all of us.
I think some of the "attitudes" some of the fd guys have towards the 8 owners is because of the popularity of the 8. The same way the 1st and 2nd gen guys look down on the 3rd gen guys. The fd is rare and quite often misunderstood by some rx-8 owners. I have put a lot of time and hard work into it to keep it running. I wish I could have an 8 that would start everytime and not smell like gas and oil, like my fd. I believe these two cars are very different and attract a different type of owner. With that being said, i believe both cars have a unique purpose. Both can coexist but, you will always have people that will have a problem with the 8, I am not one of those. But, I would like to say, at the last club meeting after I pulled up, a lot of the 8 people just kinda looked at me and my car like it was some wild animal escaped from the zoo. I am open to learning about the 8 and meeting people who share the same devotion to "spinning triangles."

just keep in mind that not every single person who owns an 8 is an idiot or walks around thinking it is the fastest car evah etc etc I grew up liking the 7, my truck broke, the 8 was out, my wallet said I could do it and boom, now I drive an 8. I bought it because I was impressed with all the thought that went into it, I liked the styling, fell in love instantly with the sound and feel of the engine etc etc. there was no other car out there that came close, especially price-for-what-you-get wise. I'll always love the fb,fc, and fd, any true car enthusiast has to respect those cars for what they brought to the table at the time they came out, just like any true auto enthusiast has to give the 8 props as well

I really wasn't trying to say that all or any 8 owners were idiots, just stating my own personal experience. I do not participate in much club activity so i really don't know that many of you guys, rx8 or rx7 for that matter. Didn't want to upset anyone. Like I said, I wouldn't mind having one as a daily driver, but I have 5 cars now, don't need another.
Just trying to throw out my .02. If you see me out at one of the meetings say hi, red fd sponsored by gotham.

I totally understood that, I was speaking more in general and not directing anything to you at all. I know there's a bunch of diehards out there that think the 8 is a travesty and an insult and blah blah blah since it doesn't have as much power and it grew two doors or whatever. I really think those types need to lightne up a bit and be thankful Mazda brought the rotary back, it's a pretty good indication that good things are coming down the pipe as they spent a ton of $ on R&D and had the brass ones to release the car, they could have just flashed a concept around and never built it like ...ahem...GM...ahem...lol

eh...someone already did that with an FC and even brought it out to the All MAzda meet a few weeks back, there wasn't a whole lot of animosity at all....actually...I'm pretty sure he had every person there wanting his car after he started it up and drove off, it was quite the sight...lol
