[Houston] RX- Club of Houston - December Meeting - 12/6/2005
2005 has brought hardships for many. From family emergencies to natural disasters, it seems that everyone you come in contact with has either been affected or donated in some way to a cause. <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

As you know for the last 3 years The RX Club of Houston (formerly the Houston RX-7 Club) has participated in two charity fundraising events each year. In November, we would conduct a food/needs drive for Casa De Esperanza Children’s Home and in December we participated in the Toy’s for <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" /><st1:Street w:st="on"><st1:address w:st="on">Tots Drive</st1:address></st1:Street>. This year, we have put our November commitment on hold, as we did not want to ask too much from our club members as many have suffered personally and even more have committed to help the community through these rough times.

However, as you are well aware our surrounding communities have donated above and beyond, most to their fullest capacities. With more and more needs having to be met this holiday season, it appears that funding and donations will be more limited. In these hard times, we are hoping that we can count on the support of our great club members who have given so selflessly in the past to support an extremely worthy cause we’ve stumbled across.

The Ronald McDonald House of Houston, located at <st1:Street w:st="on"><st1:address w:st="on">1907 Holcombe Blvd</st1:address></st1:Street> provides a 50-bedroom home away from home located in the Texas Medical Center. The three‑story brick atrium building includes an eight station kitchen, special needs kitchen, dining room, playrooms, laundry room, outside play area, and even a one room school. In an average year, over 16,000 nights of lodging are provided to about 700 different families who have traveled to Houston from throughout the U.S. and the world seeking a cure for their child’s disease.

At Christmas, the house runs a special program called the “Santa Store” in which they set up a store front for the families of patients to pick out gifts for their children (both the patient and any of their siblings, as most of the families have no money due to high medical expenses or not being able to work). In addition, the patients also get their special time to shop for their parents. They developed this idea several years ago when they realized families were losing out at these most important holiday memories because they couldn’t leave the house and didn’t have the funds to participate in something extra, when it was needed the most. The “Santa Store” allows for everyone in Ronald McDonald House and their families to experience as close to a perfect Christmas as possible by creating the Christmas morning moments in their home away from home.

In order for the “Santa Store” to run successfully they rely on community donations to fill the store. Everything must be new. We’ve attached a list of the most popular items. Older Girls, Boys and Adults are the most needed gifts and gift certificates are always welcome because they can shop online.

Please help make these families Christmas’s a little brighter by supporting this cause and offering happy memories at a most difficult time. Items (or $ if you’re not one to shop) will be collected at the next club meeting, Tuesday, December 6th at Freebird’s located in Shepard’s Plaza at 3745 Greenbriar (Shepard & 59).

THANK YOU for your continued support. We look forward to seeing you and all your awesome donations next month!!!

Sorry that I could not attend.
I am now working in Akron Ohio on a contract job for Roadway Express. It will last at lease 6 months and can go 2 years or more. I will come back home to Houston once in a while to drive the 7.
The last two days have seen morning temperatures around 12F.

Greetings everyone,
First of all a great big thank you to those of you who came out last week and supported the club and the Ronald McDonald House with your generosity and support.
Due to a miscommunication between the staff at Ronald McDonald House and our event coordinator we learned that Thursday was the last offical day for donations.
Luckily, a fortunate turn of events (over-purchasing) happened Wednesday morning at work that allowed me to acquire two huge sheet cakes and a couple hundred cookies plus several dozen grab bags of candies. A couple of calls later and we made the executive decsision to transport the donated items along with the cakes, cookies and other goodies on Wednesday night. This increased our overall donation and allowed us to make the deadline for donations.
My apologies for anyone who had their hearts set n coming out to donated the goods themselves, however after continued discussions with the staff we are looking into having another event there in the spring. (Stay tuned)
I have posted a couple of pictures from the meeting along with our trip to the Ronald McDonald House for viewing. Thank you again for everyone's hard work and donations they are appreciated.
Happy Holidays,
Keith
