What does it take?
Can somebody simply just lay it out for me and tell me what the basic parts needed for a single turbo are. Of course there is the turbo, downpipe, wastgate, manifold, and block off plates. I'm talking down to the little stuff like v-bands and flanges. Specifically how many of each.
Or even better, show me a site that has a how-to on a custom single set-up. I've looked with no success. Thanks in advance.

The number of little things can vary based upon how you put your kit together there is no know all end all diy for it. Why don't you give us an idea of what you want and maybe we can help you out more

well I'm staying very open at this point but I would like maybe a little over 400hp (theres also not much wrong with having more hp, 400 is just my goal) which is coming from a stock remanned, non-ported motor. I was thinking to4S w/ .96 a/r as my main choice then maybe a gt35/40 of some ratio. Any suggestion are more than welcome.
My main OVERALL goal is to just keep the price down, I feel like most of the name brand turbo companies are raping us with there prices and i know it can be done for less with more work. Rotary extreme gave me the incentive to start my own project with their DIY turbo parts

If you're building the kit yourself there are many different ways to go about designing all the components. I mean you could get away using just 2 v bands... both for the wastegate, or if you search for my name you will find a picture I posted of an option for a different downpipe that the guys at A-Spec came up with for the 35/40. Your goals are pretty general and it would be difficult for someone to say this is all the hardware you need because there are different ways you could design your kit.
As for the name brands raping us... I don't know. The thing you have to realize is that shops have to cover their own research and development time. Let's take A-Spec's 35/40 kit... many feel it's too expensive, but when you consider the design time plus the fact that those guys are constantly trying to find ways to improve their kits whether it be a new manifold or downpipe, they've got to cover that time. Ok rant over.

As for the name brands raping... I don't know if they're raping but they are a company so they won't go through the trouble of it all if they don't stand to make substantial money. Think about it. Depending on the turbo/your fabrication skills/what extras you spring for you could be able to do it yourself for far less, or you might wind up coming close to what you'd pay for the kit. I've seen it both ways.
