What is an AR ratio?

to put it plainly all it is is a number which indicates how much a turbo's exhuast housing will flow. It can only be compared to other turbo's from the same family, ie: a T04 0.96A/R flows more than a T03 0.96A/R.
it is explained very well in a book called Turbochargers by Hugh MacInnes, i think the A = Area, R = Radius, cause that is how the number is figured out, the area of the inlet runner at a certain place divided by the radius of it in a certain place.

It's the amount that the "snail" part of the turbine housing contracts it's diamater (or area A) vs the radius (R) from the turbine centerline as it scrolls around the "snail". The Area/Radius is constant throughout the turbine housing, as the cross-sectional area decreases as it scrolls closer to the turbine (i.e. as radius is decreased). I wish I could draw you a picture.
It basically controls turbine speed by determining the gas velocity to the turbine. A larger A/R slows down the turbine to allow for more power, while a smaller A/R speeds it up for better low-end response. It all depends on what you want the car to do, and what kind of turbo you are using.

Yeah, that's why they cost so much... depends on the going price of escargot. Laugh as you may, it's the most important part of the turbocharger as it gives it that added "kick", much like the worm in tequila.
Actually, it's more like a chambered nautilus, but I figured that some people wouldn't know what that is.
