Cool Thrust Bearings?

search search and search and came up with nothing.

How can you, if you can after all, identify that a turbo has a 360 bearing installed?
I mean without actually dissembling the unit.

I got a to4s at hand and I would like to verift that this turbo has a 360 bearing. It will be used on a nissan, with a .58 exhaust a/r. however I just wanted to find out.

Also, if you mark the wheel in relation to the shaft, can you pull apart the turbo and re assemble it with out actually balancing it?

May sound stupid but I would appreciate your thoughts.

Thanks

George

your interest in checking on the type of thrust bearing is properly placed as it is important to run a 360 w the rotary's higher exhaust temps.

there is no way of learning which bearing you have unless you take it apart. unfortunately i do not know the answer to your indexing question but someone on the board should be able to answer it.

good luck,

What Howard said.

The only way to verify the type of thrust is pop the cover/wheel and backplate off. You can do this your self no problem as long as you index the comp wheel in relation to the turbine shaft. You wont have balancing issues at all as long as it goes back the same way it came apart. But honestly, who cares weather it has the 360 or not, if the turbo is good run it and wait till it goes out on you (or whoevers car it will be on). Even with not running a 360 thrust, chances are the turbo will still be running fine by the time the guy gets tired of owning the car, or he'll end up wanting more power/quicker spool and end up swapping it out. For curiosity's sake, do it your self, but to pay a turbo shop to verify 360 or not is bit much.

Use a scribe or lightly scratch a line on the shaft with a jewlers file and scratch it on the comp wheel. Markers work too, but then you have to worry about the marker wearing off, or if you clean any parts the market comming off from the solvents or any oil that me be in the turbo itself.
