T04S or T04E???

I'm getting a j-spec TII engine next week 89-91. I want to upgrade the stock turbo to something running 400RWHP using Haltech E6K.

Just wanted to know which one of these turbos i should run or if you guys have a better one yet????

thanks

It would be much easier to get 400 rwhp with the T04S. As long as the motor can breath at higher rpms, this will be a great solution. If your motor does not breath well at higher rpms, it might be better, possibly overall, to run the T04E.

just my .02

TO4E = 400-420
To4S = 400-470

It also depends on what exaust housing your going to run...

didn't you just say in another thread that the t78 is laggy at 15psi?

i read somewhere that early turbo engines had laggy turbos because they're less stressful on the engines, as time went on the manfacturers made the engines sturdier and sturdier so they could size the turbos for less lag and the inherent stress that comes with running with a small turbo.

hmm.

then again if you just consider an engine to be a consumable item then I'd rather have the smallest turbo that will reasonably make the power I want. (not like a T25 spinning way off its compressor map, you understand )

You have seen the dyno of my motor. The nice thing about the T04 series is the drive-ability. I am sure everyone else likes this too. I enjoy the low-end kick the motor still has. I even put out 393+ rwhp at 14 psi. Dude, it is all in the tuning and what parts you pick. This is the recipe to success - not a T78 everytime. I do understand that the T78 will produce more horsepower at the the same boost. The cost you pay is low rpm power. This is evident in camparing many of the T04 dyno charts to the T78 dyno charts even with the same boost. The other variable some guys forget or overlook is how they port the motor and where they have the best flow. This needs to be matched to the turbo for optimal results. I have found living with the motor I have, the porting is too radical for the turbo I have - though, like your comments with the T78 - we ARE having fun!

This is untrue. A T04E (depending on the trim) can easily put out 450WHP.

You also sacrifice low-end power with the larger turbos.. Bigger doesn't mean better by any means..

Someone was making almost 500 hp with a modified T04S. Not sure if Pete is still using a T04S - if he is, they are up to 570 rwhp now. His motor is still together also. I am sure he has the lag also of a T78 at that point though.

Remember, it is all in the setup and tuning!

i need the fast spool and low-end cause i'm gonna be auto-xing with this car, so i don't want a huge lag, this car is not gonna be dragged

Then go with an A/R 1.0 P trim exaust and a T04S or a 62-1 A/R 70 compressor... You'll be happy...

Turbonetics for about a $1,000 or so...

Anouther good thing about a To4 is you can overhaul it for about $50 unless you kill it bad...

There are many places to get the turbos. One place that lots of people used was Turbo City in Southern California. The one place that does good turbo stuff is also X S Engineering. They should be able to build and recommend anything your heart desires.
