Suitable single turbo
Hey fellas
Im picking up a cosmo 13BT-REW engine next week and was interested in what you guys think would be the perfect single turbo setup for it? Its destined for my 1985 series 3.
Matt.

Although you havent given us much to work with as far as goals or application, I'd say a GT35R. In a light car like a first gen it'll make more than enough power, with good low rpm spool.

Yeah sorry bout that, the car will be a street driven and ill be looking at making 350hp at the wheels, id be happy with that in such a small car like the first gen, anymore and i doubt id keep it straight lol.
Just unsure as what to go with before i take the plunge, also i have to take into consideration the steering gear box which is right next to the exhaust so i assume there will have to be some creative custom work with exhaust manifolds and such? plus space is a bit restricted.
so yeah in short
- Goal 350HP
- Purpose is Street and Show (maybe some track days in the future)
- Space issues (heat)
- High performance

I had the same problems until I rebuilt my car.... I ended up useing a one off tubular that I made for a IHI C-7 (T-62ish in garret sizeing).
but you might want to go the same route I did. I swapped the TII front crossmember into the S-3 body, along with the wireing harness, steering column and dash.
it gives you rack and pinion, bigger brakes, better selection for suspension, complete compatibility with stuff like the Power FC ECU, as well as the ability to keep a/c and if desired ps.
it also makes it so that an series 6 and above manifold will now fit in the series3 body (at least with a series 5 motor it does).

Cheers GoodfellaFD3S ill have a look.
Yeah kenn ive asked Re-speed about seeing if i could get their new rack and pinion crossmember made RHD.
They said it could be done for me but id have to source a suitable RHD rack? might be a bit tricky here in Australia? but your idea sounds good so ill check that out also.
Getting rid of the steering gear box would be beneficial i think, i mean if you have a turbo and manifold just inches from it wouldn't be good for it lol
Thanks guys very helpful stuff.

hey matt....just some info...I have a 13B-RE (Cosmo 13B), stock port in a 1979 series 1 rx7.
I made 351whp, 300wtq @ 16psi on 91 octane.
I got a custom manifold built to move the turbo as far forward as possible since that was the simplest way.
I used a the innovative gts70 DBB turbo with a 1.15 p trim hot side.
I am in Trinidad, West Indies but my car was tuned by an Aussie (Hitman), I guess u might have heard of him.
just thought u would be interested since our setups are so similar.
good luck.
