Stainless manifold noise
How loud should a stainless manifold(ebay special) be with .84 housing.
I still have the stock cat, and stock cat back.
It "sounds" like I have an leak down there(big suprise) but i've tightened everything down super tight and felt all along all the joints for hot air and can't feel anything.
at idle, its nearly stock volumes. I touch the throttle and it its quite a bit noisier. Harsh noise. angry bees in a can its quiet at the back.
it is loud enough I can clearly hear it driving down the road.
the motor is a stock reman.
My v-band was leaking, and I got a new one from ATP and don't seem to have any leaks there any more.
The flange that bolts to the block was warped out a bit on the manifold(cheap) but it was warped in such a way that I thought when bolted down it would actually seal better.
anyways...
I guess I'm wondering if this noise is just the noise from a rotorary with a stainless header?
anyone have any thoughts? Has anyone else installed an ebay special manifold yet and has the car running?
thanks
john

My guess is it's the base flange, but I can't tell from here, I wouldn't put your hands down there unless the car is cold and even then be quick about it, it gets hot very quick down there, better to use incense or a punk hold it by where you think the leak is even if it's small it will blow the smoke away and you'll know where the leak is at.

I am interested in quieting down my SS-manifold and thin SS downpipe car, too. I plan to get some ceramic coating to add a little mass and hopefully a dampen the sound a bit. I also plan to use header wrap on the downpipe, but probably not the manifold. These changes have some nice engine bay heat advantages as well, but half of my interest in them is my hope that they will quiet the system down.

mine does also have a "think..think..think...think" kind off noise to it specially at idle , but its not leaking though
see if you can find any soot deposits or carbon near the flanges (it will turn black) then you will know if its leaking ,ZERO R `s method sounds also like a very good idea

Use a piece of vacuum tubing as sort of a stethescope and probe around down there with one end, other end in your ear. You will be able to locate the leak fairly quickly. It will be distinctly louder.

those ebay manifolds are paper thin, i bought one before i bought the gt 35/40 kit. the is alot of harmonic resonance from those thin runners. mild steel and cast iron are better when it comes to suppressing noise. i chosed stainless steel because of the bling bling quality

id choose stainless because of the high thermal strength properties it has over mild steel. cast iron would be ideal... or cast stainless. especially 321 stainless, that stuff is the best to use for high heat applications. it withstands extreme heat temperatures alot better than 304 stainless and holds up better on heat and cool cycles... plus its shiney

Maybe they changed design... Who knows. I'm happy though.

Thats a vid of my car with stainless manifold and downpipe.... its a bit tinny, but not like raw exhaust...
A leak usually kind sounds like an echo of the rear exhaust noise, but the stainless makes if sound like someone is tapping a rod against the pipe..max
