Sparco intercooler questions

I'm looking to buy an intercooler for my '90 RX-7, but I'm not sure what one to get. The car is basically stock (and only running 5.5lbs of boost) with a full turbo-back exhaust. Runs 14.1 @ 100mph in the 1/4 mile.

Here's the specs on the intercooler:
Manufacturer: Sparco

Width : Top 31 1/2 inches Bottom 26 inches over 25" inbetween inlet/outlet holes.

Height : 13 1/2 inches

Core Dimentions:

Width : 24 inches

Height : 13 inches

Thickness : 3 inches

inlet and outlet are 2.5" diameter

Now, first of all, what do you guys think of these sizes and if you know of this intercooler. Is it any good (low pressure drop and good cooling) and all that? Also, will it fit as an FMIC on my '90 TurboII? I know a guy who'll do the piping for me.

It will fit in your TII. Why are you spending so much on an expensive intercooler if you are still running near stock boost levels though?

Sounds like a good size, but a strange size. Is is custom? If you know the Spearco core number or assembly number I can look up the stats for you.

Good luck making it fit. My FMIC only has a 20" core (about 26" total length with end tanks) and it barely fits between the headlights. You may be able to put it in the radiator location, move the radiator closer to the engine, and use an electric fan, but I'm not sure.

Yes, it will definitely be too big for the front of an FC without doing extensive mods to the front end.
24" wide core, plus extra for end tanks... that's huge.
I think pretty much the largest core you can use on an FC wihout extensive front end mods is about 18" wide.

craaaaaap.. yeah it's on eBay, I was thinking about it cause it seemed kinda cheap for the size and manufacturer.. I don't NEED one now but if I got it I'd get an MBC and allow the boost to actually go to at least stock levels (8 psi) and port the wastegate and hope it doesn't creep (stock fuel).

Mine fits with a 20" core (barely), but it also depends on what type of end tanks are used, and especially how the piping is routed. My FMIC has end tanks which point the pipes straight out the sides, so part of the car needs to be cut for pipe clearance, and then 90deg bends route the air to and from the engine bay. If you wanted the same type of FMIC but with the 90deg bends not extending through any sheet metal, then the core would have to be shorter, and 18" max does sound like a good rule of thumb, depending on the end tanks and pipe bends. Does this make sense? Anyway, you could use a 20" core with end tanks which point directly back toward the engine bay, but then you would need a smaller radiator to fit between the tubes.

Like I said, though, you could mount the FMIC in the radiator spot, which I believe is wider, although you should measure it to make sure. Somebody on this forum has a setup like this and posted pics, but I forgot who it was.

Hmm, it looks a lot like a Spearco 2-205B assembly. Are you sure that it is 3" thick rather than 3.5" thick?

Well, I doubt it's going to fit between the headlights. However, I think it may fit in place of the radiator, but it's too close to be able to tell for sure. My radiator is 26 3/8" x 16", and it barely fits between the frame rails. The frame rails are only at the lower part of the car where that intercooler is fortunately its thinnest, and also that intercooler is 2 1/2" shorter than my radiator, which means it will not stick down as far toward the frame rails. You may want to try a test fit by removing your radiator and making a cardboard mock-up of the intercooler (you should do this before buying any custom intercooler, radiator, etc.). Also note that the frame rails widen up a few inches past the radiator mounting area, so I guess you could also mount the intercooler behind the radiator, although this is obviously not the best place to put it.

A horizontal mount may also work, although the end tanks may not be so great for the required plumbing.

Well, I don't know if the frame rails on an FD are wider than an FC...but this is what it looks like between the frame rails on an FD...
